I have been giving my cat half dry Purina One mixed with half dry Innova for cats, and a little bit of canned friskies. I want to switch to a mostly canned food diet for her since I now know canned is better for cats. What is the best cat canned food? She's a perfect weight and a little under 2 years old. Thank you very much.

a little storey about canned food..

I worked at a shelter - there was a cat brought in by its owner he said it was 2 yrs old. When it came time to see if the cat would vet check ok - (before putting it for adoption) they looked at the teeth and figured the owner lied and the cat was at least 8 yrs old or MORE!

so the vet tech being angry at the guy phoned him up to give him heck for lying to us.. but turns out the guy had been honest - he even had his original purchase papers.. she was 2 yrs but had been fed ONLY canned food.

yes canned is good - is it better?? not neseccarily.. a balance is required...

canned food by its nature contains more meat.. there is not such a difference in quality in canned as there is in dry...

select a CHICKEN, TURKEY, or LAMB formula - stay away from fish (its actually bad for cats)

and dont buy anything Science Diet - you will pay too much for low quality..

just learn how to read ingredients. And when you go to the pet store, look at all the labels ( thats what i used to do when i started out, and i would be in there for awhile, but its worth it for your little babies! ) people LOVE to think science diet is a good food, but the first ingredient is CHICKEN BY PRODUCT. and thats NOT what you want. NO chicken BY PRODUCT, no CHICKEN MEAL, no CORN GLUTEN and WHEAT FLOUR. The first 3 ingredients are the most important. Make sure its just " CHICKEN " or just " BEEF " Your doing well with giving INNOVA. that IS GOOD stuff. Dont ever buy cat food from a grocery store, its all CRAP. Petco, Local Feed Stores or PetSmart are great places. A little more expensive that crappy grocery store brands, but good food means less trips to the vet for the future and a healthy kitty! Good luck!

The good news is that there are many good brands out there. You're sure to find at least one that is readily available and that your cat likes.

I can recommend any food from the What to feed link.

I personally have fed Natural Balance. It's available (in Wisconsin at least) at Petco. It's a good food and isn't pricy. I'm currently feeding Nature's Variety Instincts. It's $1.79 per can but one of my cats has issues and this food is really helping her. They also make the Prairie line but I think Instincts is a better food, FWIW.

The linked article gives you much info about choosing a good food, and most importantly, includes links to the foods' websites, which in turn have store locators so you can find where it's sold in your area.

A good rule of thumb is that if it comes from the grocery store, it's not going to be good food. You'll find the best foods at indy pet stores, although some chain stores will carry some varieties.

When it comes to canned cat food, just make sure that the first three ingredients listed on the can are meat. (Not meat by products or corn meal, or other fillers.) The brand does not matter too much as long as you follow this guideline.

Actually, dry food is fine for cats as long as there is plenty of water. My pair actually turn up their noses at canned food- literally.

But if you want to give your kitty canned food, as someone else said, look for one with meat instead of by-products.
