The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced that U.S. taxpayers will be footing the startup costs of a program to install satellite tracking technology on vehicles taking part in the Mexican Truck Demonstration Program.

The announcement confirmed the U.S. government would "initially spend approximately $367,000 to outfit all trucks from the United States and Mexico that take part in the program."

According to the administration, "the decision to require the installation of satellite tracking technology on trucks in the program was made after members of Congress expressed a desire to know whether participants are complying with federal safety and trade laws."

A key opponent of the program, and author of the language in the transportation appropriations bill to halt funding of the program, continued to express disappointment Barry Piatt, spokesman for Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., told WND, "It's an indication that they are going forward with the program, despite strong and pretty clear opposition from both chambers of Congress."

Congressman Duncan Hunter's office told WND he agrees. "The tracking technology, while a step in the right direction, does very little to ensure compliance with safety and security standards. The focus must remain on implementing reliable and enforceable standards that ensure Mexican truckers with access to U.S. roadways do not threaten the safety of vehicle motorists or America's security," explained Joe Kasper, spokesman for Hunter, R-Calif.

According to the FMCSA, the technology will help continue to ensure that trucks operating as part of the program are complying with the agency's rigorous safety standards and U.S. trade laws.

More of the double standard.

IDIOTS!!! what does a tracking device have to do with safety?
The tracking device will tell me where the truck is, it does not tell me it is safe or what it is carrying.
Why do we have to pay for it? If the Mexican Trucking Company is so poor that it cannot afford the tracking devices then it is too poor to properly maintain it's trucks to our safety standards. What's next? maybe we should buy them new trucks?

Is there no end to the perversion that exists in our government today?

There are arguements for and others against this. First, the cost is tiny. DO you realist that this is less money that one - JUST ONE - member of congress gets for salery and expenses for one year. There are 400 of these blood suckers on the taxpayers back - one more is nothing.

It is good to know where Mexican trucks are. This is an advantage. If a wreck occurs, it also identifies the offender immediately. It also makes sure that these aleien trucks go where they should and not cross the border and wander around unsupervised. Wo knows what they could be bringing is - or out - as they roam unsupervised where they might want to go regardless of the declared destination.

As far as the money is concerned - when you talk about a budget measured in trillions of $$ this is absolutely nothing. not even large enough to be blamed on a misplaced decinal point.

I agree that we should demand that these truck be equipped with these devices before they come in and at the operators expense. If they want to do business in the US, let them pay for the privelage. But It is also necessary to keep track of them. It has little to do with safety issues. It has a lot to do with kiiping them on the roads that they should be following and not wandering around without supervision. That is the real issue, hidden under the guise of safety.

Would I vote for it - You bet. Would I like to pay for it. No, but in consideration of the real purpose - absolutely.

there are racists on all sides but everybody like intermediaries are trying to keep everything cool before it comes to a boiling/fighting point. I think the real problem is the economy but that just my opinion. economy is going down the shithole and the people suffering are the bkue collar workers. tell your kids to stay in school and be the best or else they gonna have to compete for the same jobs that poor class people want.

Another one for the Bush administration. Wasting our money yet again on a bogus program that won't accomplish what it's intended to. Congress is opposed.

I am 100% against this.

I love watching my tax dollars do absolutely the opposite of what I want them to do. The only thing I want my federal taxes used for is defense and border security. Everything else should be state run. Remember the CONSTITUTION?!?!
