It seems like fake and cheap are the 2 guiding requirements of many of the posters on here. I know I will get slammed for saying that, but that is my honest opinion. I think you're asking this because of the earlier ? the guy asked about getting a fake diamond and many responses said fake is better cause it's cheap and if the woman actually loved him,t hey'd be ok with that. I happen to heartily disagree with that. I'd always rather have less of the real thing than more of the imitation.
To me, too many people are happy with "good enough"--you know it never really is. Nothing is a good as the genuine article.

No I don't like fake stuff. I also don't understand how many people claim the fake stuff is cheaper when it isn't always. The fake cakes with the supplemental sheet cakes are twice as much labor, if not more, for the baker so they should be more expensive. In any other line of work, twice the labor means twice as expensive. I don't get how bakers can make a living doing this when they charge so little for so much extra work. As far as silk flowers go, yeah you can get them for next to nothing at the dollar store or Walmart but I have yet to see any, even at high end stores like Michael's which are expensive, that look remotely realistic. You can get fresh flowers from an online wholesaler cheaper. In regards to allergies, I am deathly allergic to pollen on flowers that are fresh cut from the garden but that same bouquet at the grocery from a professional florist doesn't bother me because the pollen has been removed. The flowers aren't expected to last forever. That's why you get good photography.

I see what you are saying, but to each his own, right?
I am having a real wedding cake, but I am also paying a pretty penny for it. I see where the temptation for a sheet cake might come in, $400 could go towards a nicer dress, venue or ring....
I did go with fake flowers for my bouquet, it isn't about the cost, it is about the souvenier. I do not have to pay a lot of $$$ to have someone preserve my already expensive bouquet. It is already ready to be framed in a shadowbox. I handpicked every flower for the color & symbolism of my choosing. I was able to add in pearls, crystals and feathers for an absoultely gorgeous bouquet! I didn't have to settle for cheap flowers, there are some very high quality fake flowers. Also, this is one last thing to have to do on my wedding day, I don't have to pickup and check flowers. This way I can get my hair and makeup done with much less stress.
There are many reason people choose the way they do, remember that others might find some of your choices unsatisfactory or even tacky. Like I said, to each his own.

I agree with you, I do not think fake things are right to use at weddings. You at least need some kind of a cake and flowers are necessary to make the wedding soft and personal. Do not listen to modern thinking people that use these things, you will not save that much money using fake stuff and you only have just this one day to celebrate with real things.

I get the fake flowers for many reasons... they don't wilt, they're dependable, cheaper, and they don't have a fragrance
But the fake cake?? I looked it up and the fake cake is just as expensive if not more than a real one!! I truly don't understand why someone would go for that. I'm having a small pretty cake for my hubby and I (for costs) and sheet cake to pass out, but all the cake will be real!

I think the fake cake for show is just silly. Rather than us doing that (we didn't want a 'wedding cake'), we used an ethnic tradition of having Ukrainian braided breads, decorated in our colours and done in three tiers, as a centerpiece for the head table. That is an ancient tradition, and was meaningful to us. We served a variety of cheesecakes and dainties after dinner, and for late lunch. We gave away wrapped and decorated fruitcake at donations, for people to put under their pillows to dream of their true love (an old family tradition).
We had lovely real, fresh flowers. However, I can understand someone using good quality silks, simply because of the cost. But for us, it was obviously a special occasion, and we chose beautiful fresh flowers.
And my breasts are real, too.

I think that people that spend a fortune on real flowers that wilt and die before the day is over are not very savy. With silk flowers, you can have the flowers exactly as you want them weeks before hand, there is no chance of something being brown, or wilty, or dying, and it gives someone a keepsake of the wedding they can save if they care to. Aside from the sentimental value and the lowered stress level of having the flowers and knowing they are right, if your that worried about the "details" of the wedding and having to have "real" stuff, can you really say that you can tell for most things. As long as you go with real looking flowers, no one will ever really know.

This is an interesting question...it all depends, to be honest. There are upsides and downsides to everything.
Personally, I don't care for the fake cakes, which is why I didn't have one at my own wedding.
As for flowers, I chose to carry silk. However, I am allergic to practically everything on the planet. As much as I adore fresh roses, I didn't need to (and frankly didn't want to) deal with a massive allergy attack over the bouquets/boutennieres, nor did I want to get myself all doped up on allergy medicine on my wedding day. It simply wasn't worth it to me. As an added bonus, I got to keep my bouquet and it looks just as nice as it did the day I got married.
The truth of the matter is, you CAN cut some corners and save some money, and frankly, I think if your wedding day is that important, you'll find things you WANT to invest in, and details that simply don't matter as much - so it stands to reason that you may want to spend MORE money on the photographer and the rings and less on say, monogrammed napkins or chair covers or ceiling treatments, so you prioritize your budget. That decision is personal, and everyone's going to have different ideas on what's the most important thing to them. I think it starts getting tacky when you see that A LOT of corners have been cut just to try to look like you have more of something.....more flowers, more napkins, more cake, more whatever. In that case, I say have less, do it right and live within your means. Does that make sense?

I have seen some awesome pictures of "fake cakes" and they just do not look fake, if no one was told no one would know. I personally looked for cheap "real" alternatives and went for the cup cake stack ( actually not that cheap!!) and cut back on the flowers (we didn't need any to decorate the ceremony venue) so I do believe that there are cheap "real" ways of doing things, but if you can do it well then just don't tell anyone.

see that's the great thing about the world we live in ...
to each their own, everyone can have their own opinion
i am getting a tier cake that serves 50. the other will be a sheet cake. that way i get my tier cake for pictures etc... and because it's affordable this way and nobody will know the difference btwn tier and sheet.
i think cupcake cakes are silly looking. that's why i wouldn't have one.
we are also having a dessert table with cake alternatives
i am having silk flowers because i want a lasting memento that won't dry out or turn funky on me. again they are also more affordable. i found some silks that are extremely realistic looking. i wouldn't get cheap obvious fakes.
you are free to think what you want about the joy and what not.
and i am free to think about what i want for my wedding and what i can afford.
