I spent the Christmas of 1975 in basic in San Antonio. He won't be able to keep much personal stuff in the barracks it will be stowed away until he gets out.
Pre-Paid calling cards are nice and writing paper and stamps will come in handy.
Make sure you write to him often. I remember mail call being the highlight of my day.

Maggie is he stationed in Del Rio???? Cause if so that's where i was born. i don't have any way of knowing what to get someone in the airforce... but if he's inside the belt (no alcohol) maybe some bottles of liquor might help him on those cold nights.
My father was in the airforce in texas and i was born down there.
I got my dad a scrapbook from J.C.Penney. It has a full sized, 12 page spread with the Air Force Crest on the front. This would be perfect for him because you can use it to put memories of you two together or save it for when he has "important" military accomplishments.

Like it has been said all personal items are stored until the graduate from basic. Someone else said it best by giving pre-paid calling cards, stamps, writing paper and envelopes. If you are planning on giving him something that he might keep a while I would wait. Once he leaves basic he will be off to tech school for whatever job he gets. I know when I went through there was not much room to have a whole lot of personal stuff. I would wait until he gets to tech school and lets you know how much room he has, then send it to him.
All basic training takes place at Lackland AFB, TX (San Antonio).

The knife is a good idea, however he can not bring it to basic. For my husbands birthday I got him a gold cross necklace. He will be allowed to wear that in basic too, as long as it does not hang out of his shirt. Another idea is to make him a Little photo album, I know when I went through basic that helped me out... Tell him I say good luck..

But if the reindeer convert that energy in #5 into propulsion, that would solve the point you missed about what fuel (with the attendant mass of such vast amount of fuel) could be used to power such a speedy flight.

Christmas of 1976 in basic at San Antonio for me. I would say as another suggested prepaid calling cards. A promise to wright daily would be appreciated once he is there.

Get him a nice pocket knife with his name inscribed on the side. Find one with a bone handle.
