Me and my family want to visit my granparents in Mexico, and I was wondering if I need a passport or if we can use our birth certificates like we used to? I live here in El Paso, Tx close to the border.

Not until January 2008. But even then, if you are passing through a checkpoint and have your driver's license and Birth Certificate and speak perfect English, I doubt they will hold you back.

Still, just apply for the passport through the expedited service. It will cost around 200-300 bucks, but you'll have it in 1-2 months and you won't have to worry about it for 10 more years.

You can travel into Mexico with a birth certificate and photo I.D., BUT, all persons going into the USA, which includes US citizens, must now have a passport. Visa's for Mexico are obtained at the border or on the flight coming into Mexico. Check with the airlines if you are flying to see if they require a passport.

The person above me is wrong. You don't need a passport to leave the US, you need it to return to the US.
