Cat shampoo is safe for dogs, not all dog shampoos are safe for cats. Permethrin is in a lot of dog products and lethal to cats for example. This is the reason vets don't recomend advantix for dogs in households that have cats.

Baths are not the best way but are sometimes need to clean the dog, killing fleas as a by-product. I would use advantix if you have no cats or advantage or frontline drops if you do have cats to break the flea cycle.

Pantene daily clarifying shampoo is also safe (is recomended on ferrets) and also kills fleas. I have heard that dawn dish soap will kill fleas but it seems it would be harsh on the coat/skin.

To beat fleas you have to take a multi prong approach, all pets, bedding, house and vacuming tossing the bag every day and yard.

1 It wouldn't work as it's a lot milder than dog shampoo. It would be less likely to cause harm to a dog than if you used a dog shampoo on a Cat, that could kill the poor cat!
2 It's always better to use a product designed for dogs or cats on the right animal. Some dog products can kill or harm cats, including pet foods!
3 Shampoos are an expensive but ineffectual treatment for fleas!

It would be okay to use, it shouldn't harm the dog (cat shampoos are formulated to be milder than the dog ones). However, it might not be as effective, and even the dog flea shampoos aren't that great, it's more of an "immediate relief" thing but doesn't tend to get rid of all of them. What I'd do (this is more expensive but worth it to keep fleas away) is go to your vet or a pet store that sells Frontline or Advantage. These are better for your pet than the OTC brands (Hartz, Zodiac) which can cause skin irritation and don't really work very well. Also, there's a product called Advantage Multi, which treats fleas AND helps prevent heartworm (at least in cats, I assume they have one for dogs). I believe Frontline's "Plus" version does the same thing.

As others have pointed out, cat shampoos are milder than those for dogs as a rule. However, I've never seen a flea shampoo that would really work well long-term.

You would be better off getting your furry friend dipped and treated with something like Front Line or Revolution, and treating the house for flea infestations with Borax and a vacuum cleaner.

Good luck!

Flea shampoos don't work very well to begin with (and for only a very short time when they do) and formulations are different for cats and dogs (usually milder for cats). Forget the shampoo and get some Frontline Plus or Advantage if you really want the fleas to go away.

Well, cat flea shampoos don't work on cats so I doubt they'd work on dogs. More importantly however, NEVER use a product meant for one species on another.

Get some proper treatment from a vets. Shampoos are a nightmare, and they are so pointless. Frontline, Advantage, Revolution or Advocate from your vet will actually work.

1. shampoo wont work well or for long. If you want to use flea stuff, get some frontline for your pet
2. Whatever stuff it is ie. shampoo, pills etc., if you give your dog cat versions, they will be milder and less effective
3. it would be completely harmless to the dog if you were gonna do it.

Well, dog flea products are deadly for cats. Yes, deadly. Im not sure about the other way around. But it's not as exchangable as one may think. Do your research, and don't risk harming your pet!

Using cat shampoo on dog is useless. But it won't hurt the dog.

It probably wouldn't work because cat fleas are different to dog fleas (although cat fleas do end up on dogs) . Wouldn't do any harm, but you'd be far better using Frontline anyway.
