Here's the deal: Once you get to your first permanent duty station you MIGHT be allowed to live off-base if the barracks or dorms are full. You'll have to talk to your First Sergeant about it. If they let you live off-base, you will get a housing allowance that is based on (a) your rank, (b) whether you have any dependents or not, and (c) your location. You may also get a subsistence allowance for food and incidentals, which is around $275.00 a month. Be warned: Airmen who live off-base usually do not get enough in allowances to cover the rent on a decent apartment, let alone the utilities, phone, cable, etc.

The rule used to be that you had to be a noncommissioned officer (SSgt or higher) before they'd let you move off-base if you're single, but now a lot of units/bases are allowing senior airmen to move off-base regardless of the barracks/dorm situation. Just be prepared for your First Sergeant to tell you that you can't move off-base for a while, and if you get lucky be prepared to pay a lot of your monthly expenses out of your own pocket.

Exactly what he said. Basically E5 and above and in AF time that is about 15 years before you don't get to pay it out of your own pocket. Should have joined the Navy that has much faster advancement rates.

Don't count on anything and living in the barracks is not a horrible thing. IF You are smart you would save all your pay and put it away and you would be surprised how quickly it adds up. Having lots of money in the bank is WAY cooler than having a crappy apartment in the hood and a car that isn't paid for. Let your idiot co-workers spend all the money, mooch off of them and save your money.

Depends on your base and how full the dorms are. I was allowed to move off base as an E-3 because the dorm was 100% full. I received BAS and BAH but it wasn't a whole lot...I had a room dog the first year.

If you get married, you will be allowed to move off regardless of rank. Your BAH will be higher because you will have a dependent.

i'm hoping you have an remarkable GPA between different credentials. attempting to fee via OTS is amazingly no longer ordinary, exceedingly for the reason that they're reducing officers on the 2nd (exceedingly interior the profession field of your decision). You get the comparable base pay, regardless of in case you will get carry of extra BAH consistent with based. you would be able to outlive or off base.

if you're getting married and do it before you get to your permanent station you could always look into base housing. They're usually duplexs or townhome style.

For those out there reading this, yes I know base housing can suck but if you have to deploy would you rather have your wife in a crappy apartment in shady part of town or in a house inside the gate.

The AF will also pick up your stuff & your wife's stuff once you get to your permanent base or could you could move it yourself and get paid for it. You'll have to talk to TMO.

if you are single, not until you hit E4 at the absolute earliest, and typically E5.

if you are married, you will be able to live off base as soon as you get to your permanent duty station..as long as it is accompanied. if it is not, then in the barracks you stay just like your single pals.

BAH is based on paygrade and either with or without dependents.
