I love photography and I am a member of a couple of Camera groups. A good idea might be to join one or two of the on line forums on photography... Yahoo! has a number of them.

i'm an artist not a photographer, but have studied photography at school and college, and enjoy using a SLR or digital camera (if i can get hold of one) also I enjoy using camcorders occasionally and editing the piece in to a film with some music over the top. But all this can be done as a very nice hobby with out having to put both feet in the deep end and try to make a career out of it. Unless you have family in the business I would not recommend making a career out of photography. Pay for some classes to learn about SLR, developing if you are interested in the history of photography and want to have a career if not... then buy an expensive digital camera that will last, a proper one with a nice lens and case, and just travel around your area making pictures of everything and anything, sometimes what looks like a bad shot is actually really good a vice versa. Again, photography is the best hobby but the worst career. good luck!

There are plenty of community photo clubs available where you can improve upon your photography and meet people of similar interests all at the same time.
A lot of community/junior colleges also offer photography classes - another great way to learn and interact.
