Try this site. It helped me when I was researching cameras. It asks you what you want from a camera, price range, brand preferred, type of shots you take, how much zoom you want, size preferred, etc. Based on that it gives you 10-20 cameras...you can then pick a few to research more. check it out

I have the Nikon coolpix 6L. it has a 2.5"LCD and a 3x zoom. It is only rated at 6mega pix but I have to tell you that it takes better pic than my friends new camera and his is an 8meg pix!
This Nikon is very easy to use and it shoots 2hrs of video that looks like DVD, the video and audio is excellent! It will take 1000 pic on one battery! The camera has gone down in price since it first came out I think you can get on for about $200
I say what ever model you get is up to you but I would go with a Nikon all the way, they have cameras that go up to 10mega pix, those are professional grade cameras if you want to spend that kind of money. for personal use 6or 7 mega pix is all you will ever need.

First, I'd like to point out that because there are no moving parts, most digital cameras are capable of withstanding substantial abuse, including inclement weather (if you left it in a rain barrel, though, and it's not an underwater model, then all bets are off, of course!). Dry it off as much as possible by hand with a clean cloth (for the lens and view screens, avoid scratches by using "glasses" tissue paper or cloth, available at virtually all department stores and optometrists), and make sure to get into as many opennings as possible, including the cavities holding the battery and memory chip, if possible, and then leave the unit in a warm, dry place for at least a couple of days. Then, try to take a few pictures, and see what happens (the battery may have discharged, so dry it thoroughly and then recharge it, completely, first!).
Second, as with many other things in life, cameras - - digital or otherwise - - are a very personal thing, and it is not a good idea to go by people's recommendations (i.e., what's good for somebody else may not be as good for you). Having said that, go to the link, below, to find the camera of your dreams!
Third, TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR "TOYS"!!! ;)
Good luck!

You might consider the Canon S3 IS. 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom. Has manual controls in addition to auto, and has image stabilizer. Only 1 second delay between shots and is excellent on battery life. Takes AA rechargeables.
