What ever you do... don't buy him a Nintendo... please... for the sake of our society.
Beyond that... how about a bike... with training wheels?
Or an Outdoor playset of some sort.
Basketball Hoop.
Tee ball set.
Oh and my sons favorite toy is a PC mouse.. with the end cut off, cuz he was trying to stick it into electrical sockets. But it's super cute... he runs around with it flying behind him. We call it his "pet mouse".
Best of Luck!

My son's favorite toys are Thomas the Tank Engine toys. He is 3, but not at all very destructive. I got him this great "Deluxe Canyon Road and Track table" by Step2 that has ramps, bridges and canyons surrounded by areas with stickers showing ponds, train tracks, dirt and paved roads, a helo pad etc. It can be used for both cars or smaller trains. It also has a table top that converts it for table use for coloring, playdoh or any type of table activity! Cost is $99, and it's VERY sturdy. Check it out!

My boys break all their toys also so it's hard to find stuff sometimes! The legos are good, tinker toys which they love, tonka trucks are very durable, Elmo dolls, the little people toys. The legos and Elmo dolls they've had since they were 1-1.5 and they are now 3.5 years. The tonka trucks almost a year, tinker toys a few months, but they are pretty durable.

Both my children ages 15 mnths. and 3 1/2 LOVE anything hotwheels/cars... They both in particular LOVE the shake n go cars.. They run on batteries and when you shake them 4 or 5 times they GO ! They even have a two car track for them to run on.... They have the whole set.. You can also turn them off and play with them as regular cars.. They are at Target, Toys R Us/Walmart etc.. They cost about $7-$10 a piece. The track we got on clearance at Target $25 for a normally $40 track.. We've had them for about 2 yrs. and they still work GREAT !

When my son was 1 year old I bought him things like shape sorters, toys with knobs to twist, turn, push and pull, plastic tools, balls of different sizes, a slide, swing, sand pit, cars, crayons. Not necessarily all for Christmas, but just to give you an idea of what he was into. I remember the first time he went to see 'Santa'. He was two and Santa asked what he would like for Christmas. He said, 'a Fireman Sam book'. Santa said 'And what else?'. Son thought for a long time and replied, 'Two Fireman Sam books'. He didn't want as much as I felt he did (and subsequently bought him).

the toy my son has played with every day for about 5 years (he's 6) is our big set of wooden blocks. he was also very attached to his Thomas trains and tracks for a few years, but has now pretty much outgrown them. other constantly-played-with toys include marbles and marble tracks, soccer ball and goals, and paper and art supplies ... and the couch cushions, if you count those. :-). The toy kitchen was also a big hit with both my boys as well as my girls in the toddler and preschool years.

My son is two, and he is obsessed with hot wheels. We have hundreds of little hotwheels cars. The great thing about hotwheels is that they are almost impossible to break, my son could have done it if it was possible, and he can play with them for years. Most little boys like cars! And of course, they're only 99 cents a car!

My 5 year old loves anything train related - especially Thomas and Geo Trax. He's loved trains since he was a year old. He also loves the Nintendo Wii.

My 5 year old loves his Nintendo DS--yours might be a bit young for it, but plenty of 4 year olds have them
