Jewish tradition is that the fiance goes away to build a house or prepare a place for his wife and when he returns they get married. So Joseph knew it would be awhile before Mary would be his but the angel of the Lord convinced Joseph to believe what was happening to Mary. Both Mary and Joseph were partakers in what was happening.
