I'm thinking about spending a couple of months in China in my gap year, it's an opportunity i've found where I get 4 weeks worth of learning Mandarin and then teaching English in a school for a further 8 weeks.
Has anybody been there and what's it like to be there for an extended amount of time?
Any advice?

What time of year and where? I was in Beijing for 5 weeks this summer - amazingly hot! But really not too bad, everything's cheap and people are very helpful. Crime is very low in comparison to other cities and the transport is pretty good. However, in the winter it gets really cold - about -10C average. It really depends on where you go. General advice: don't take huge amounts of clothes - you'll save on baggage allowance and you can buy new over there for a LOT less. Mail me if you want more info.

I live in China and have heard plenty of stories about people having deals like yours and never being paid for their work. There are unfortunately plenty of scam artists in China.
