It can be a real event/response or a fictitious example; whichever you feel illustrates the word the best.

Good responses. Here's my example. I was selling at a flea market this customer bargains me down to almost nothing and then offers to pay by check, rather than cash. Needless to say the so called customer did not get the item.
Note to MIKEinRI isn't it affecting rather than effecting I always get confused on their usage.

Here's an interesting one that's true:
Sirhan Sirhan, who killed US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy in 1968 made this statement to the parole board in 1982:
"If Robert Kennedy were alive today, he would not countenance singling me out for this kind of treatment."
I suppose that it is just Sirhan's bad luck that somebody killed Robert Kennedy!
Edit to paperback: I'd love adding you to my contact list, but you don't allow it!

Someone I knew smashed her car turning in the wrong way into a supermarket car park (there was a sign clearly telling her that she wasn't allowed to turn). She indignantly declared that she didn't know the sign applied to her and demanded compensation from the store.
I'm sorry to report that she got it!

probably the time I brought a group of my students to a providence school board meeting and some of them got up and spoke out about what they thought was wrong with the decisions being made by the school board and how it was effecting their education.
Good luck!!!
