It's normal to be apprehensive about having surgery. The hospital staff will take good care of you. The people who draw your blood and start your IV are so good at it and do it all day, every day that they are quick and it generally feels like a pinch. Certainly you can take that. I would advise you to not look and think about something else. Perhaps think about people who get lots of tattoos...and think about how they must cope with repeated needle pokes and they keep going back for more. Psych yourself up and be brave. Regarding being naked: you aren't naked. You will be wearing a gown. They won't remove your gown. You will be completely covered and they will put sheets over all of you except for where they are working on your ankle. You are not going to feel the surgery nor will you have problems waking up from the anesthesia. Don't believe the silly crap you hear on TV. I am a recovery room nurse for 30 years and have never seen anything like that. The isolated event where someone was awake during surgery was so unbelievably rare that is why they had it on TV. Frankly, the drugs they give people nowadays they love waking up, love feeling the way they feel (high), and don't remember a thing not even about the recovery room experience when they talked with me. Your ankle will start to hurt some, but that is why you will be given pain medications to help with that. Good luck. Try to think rational and to be brave.
