If you can get SSI disability, stick with that and keep taking your meds regularly (can get help with paying for medications at http://www.pparx.org). You could try one of these programs advertised on TV where you go into business for yourself, selling items that the company ships out via internet or yardsales and flea markets for extra money. The one that the Tom Bosley from Happy Days advertises. SMC

Note- I have never done it, so I am neither advocating it or saying it is bad...I don't know...just a suggestion..

Employers do not want to hire anyone with ANY health issue now adays (like cancer, diabetes, heart problems, overweight, etc). That is why you are seeing so many young health immigrants coming in to take American jobs. They are young and healthy and so they don't raise the company's insurance premiums like an older American with health issues does. And that is just for THAT reason. Mental illness adds its own stigmas to being hired. It is best not to tell any potential employer of ANY illness and if they ask about who your family doctor is or if you have one, say no, because then they can ask you to sign a release for your family doctor to release ALL your medical records.

Step one: Get your schizophrenia under control. Find the right meds, stop drinking or doing drugs and start feeding your brain with nourishing food (very hippy, I know!). Your brain chemicals are out of balance, if it honestly bothers you, don't do anything to make it worse. Don't even think about going back to work until you have had six months without any symptoms. Seroquel/ Quetiapine worked for a friend of mine until he decided to start drinking again.

Step Two: When you've had six months symptom-free, think about going back to work then. You currently have a real illness which means that you are not capable of working, so it is unfair on yourself to pretend that you can. If you keep working while you are having symptoms, you will just fuel the problem and burn bridges. Get some rest, take care of yourself, take some proper time off, and good luck! :)

Mental illness is real and very difficult to cope with. I do not know of anyone who has similar experiences and would chat. However, it is often very hard to deal with.
Sometimes the medication helps, however, it is not a cure. Many people are on disability and can;t work because of mental illness. You are not alone.
I am on disability too. It is nothing to be ashamed of. It is very good that you are doing things... You are still able to function in society.

My question is what does your doctor say about the level of difficulty you are having? If he has not adjusted your medications to try to get rid of the symptoms, you should go to him for help. But he can't know you need it if you don't tell him. Don't be afraid that he will lock you up. There are lots of different meds and therapies and some work for some while others work for others. Lots of schizophrenics and bipolars work, but you've got to get your symptoms fixed first. Keep trying, since giving up and just withdrawing is not good for you either. Good Luck!

I am a schizophrenia paranoid outpatient on anti-psychotic med's who was diagnosed over 40 years ago. I was able to work (and attend universities) for many years of my illness. I am now retired and don't seem to hallucinate any more. If you are interested in talking to me look my answers on schizophrenia up in my profile and/or e-mail me via the means available at my profile.

my sister struggles with the same problem.. she quit her job recently to go back into the instirution the voices were so bad she could not stand it any longer.
The next day she rethought what she had done and luckily got her job back.... It takes allot more than most people for a person in this shape to be successful. Keep this in mind so you can do what is right for you.....
