No rules but you don't become an atheist by thinking God sucks. Its because you no longer believe there is a God. Although your feelings may be the impetus to examine a belief system and the evidence or lack of evidence for it. If you are angry at God though you are not an atheist.

Ok -- if you are truly an Atheist then you would not believe in God one way or the other.

There is no definitive book of rules for being an Atheist.

If God has failed you somehow, then by all means explore other religions and non-religions and see if you find something that you can relate to.

I also do not believe in God, but I respect those that do.

Nobody should be penalized for beating to a different drum.

Atheists don't believe there is a God and can't get mad at something that doesn't exist like you are doing. Nor is it a religion, so there is no rule book.
You sound very young by your question as it is quite immature. Stop placing blame on God and look to yourself, what have you done that when it didn't work out you were so ready to blame God. We create our own misery 9 times out of 10, God cannot be blamed for our mistakes but he can sure help us fix them.
Sorry you feel the way you do.

It does sound like you might be in the 'i don't like god because he's mean' camp of 'atheism' which really means you'll go back to it and call yourself an ex-atheist even though you never were one.

Imagine God has an infinitely kind, generous, loving spirit that wants you to live forever in paradise - if you're still not interested in him, then come join the atheists.

There's no rulebook but nobody really refrains from murder, theft and sexual assault because they're afraid of hell. If you aren't a bad person as a theist you're not likely to be an immoral person as an atheist. If you became a bad person because you feared god... then you were never really a good person.

You become an atheist by not believing in gods. If there is a rule book, that would be the only rule in it.
If you don't like god but believe he exists, then you're a misotheist.

There is no book that can tell you how to feel in your heart.
There are books that can help change your mind, or make up your mind.
If something bad has happened to you, I would consider asking yourself why, and not blame God, take a step back, you will find the reasons if you look into the minds and lives of the people that hurt you.

As you know, atheism is a lack of belief in God (or gods).

If you think God sucks, then it is fair to assume that you still believe in him.

Only when you actually figure out that god does not exist at all, will you be an atheist.

(however, you can still maintain that the 'concept' of god sucks...)

you can get the "atheists bible". talk with other atheists about your thoughts and opinions on life. there are many websites and books you can look at that contain very interesting information. you will probably find that atheists are truly good people and we are a growing group that are not evil but against violence like that of which the bible is based on.

You just followed the first rule of atheism...except that you acknowledge God by blaspheming Him. If you want to be a true Atheist then God, by your definition cannot...well, you know..cuz He's, in your estimation as well as all atheists...not real. Fictional gods of any kind can't be described with verbage cuz...well, their fictional. I'm a believer myself and I feel the opposite is true...(brace yourself, praise and worship of the One True God is imminant) in that God is all things powerful, wonderful, mysterious, merciful, loving, pure, holy, true and faithful. However, to each his own...er her own. I hope you see otherwise and soon. Love in Christ, ~J~

If you believe god sucks, then you are not an atheist. There is only one rule. You must not believe in gods, sucking gods or otherwise.
