I am Prior ARMY. and Loved every minute being in the ARMY. although there were times that I thought I would have it better as a civilian I often find times that I daydream about being back in there. Hindsight is 20-20 so I say to your son stick it out and you will benifit in the end.
20 years is not a long time just shoot straight and watch your flank.
