Everybody has "spiritual" experiences which can't be explained in a "material" way. Similarly, everybody experiences natural powers that can't be explained by ordinary experience. To explain any non-explanatory phenomenon, we invent. To create and give explanations for the unexplainable is a part of the psychological process called "closure", a very human and natural mental activity.
Sometimes people deceive themselves and are frequently satisfied to live with that deception - because often the deception extends far beyond their own lives and at the same time, at times, includes some rather wise words.... I'll let you figure out where those thoughts end up...
-----------
Politics, national priorities and much of religion, unfortunately, are a result of self deception processes, too. That's my experience. Never trust a politician who relies too much on religion to justify his policies. It all becomes, eventually, a national disgrace.

Your question is worded as though religion just popped out of thin air like religious people think the world did. This is not the case. Religion has evolved (kind of ironic isn't it). The human brain has evolved to develop many traits catered for survival. One of these traits is the "irrationality" trait. (The use of that word is not as derogatory as it seems). The irrationality trait, or Dualism, is a by-product of psychological evolution that helps us 'second guess' the intentions of perceived 'agents' like a big predator cat. Seeing that the Lion has large teeth and claws is not enough. We have to be able to put our own intentions into the Lion. "the Lion is thinking it wants to eat me". Of course we don't really know what the Lion is thinking because we aren't big cat psychics, but by trying to assume its thought process lets us run away before it’s too late. This trait is good, but as so many things in evolution is prone to 'misfiring'. That is to be in use when it's not necessary. So now we have the ability to second guess inanimate objects! We personify things that aren't alive. Even rational, logic bound Atheists will catch themselves believing a crashing computer or car that won't start somehow 'has it in for them' or is intentionally playing up! This is dualism. Transferring our mind (not literally) into other objects or agents.
Now imagine you were a human living 4000 years ago and pondering upon what the sun was as it rose above the horizon, or what those sparkling jewels in the night sky were? With no back catalogue of knowledge, it would be very easy to imagine that the sun was some sort of being that came to give life on the Earth. Indeed, many ancient cultures believed there was an ongoing battle between the sun and the night and they began to personify the sun. One particular sun God- Horrus - has a back story strikingly similar to a certain Christian character whose name begins with a J. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, stories weren't written down, they were passed on through word of mouth, changing incrementally with every telling. Indeed, such stories began not even by word of mouth but by cave paintings and the likes, maybe a million years ago! The stories evolved, changed and were replaced with new more exciting ones. Many of these stories told (almost schoolingly) told about the sun and the moon and lighting and fire. But they were just stories. A satisfying, enjoyable and simple answer to a question people would otherwise have no way of answering. That, of course, does in no way mean they had any such basis in reality or truth, and the tradition of passing on such "knowledge" and stories has never really left us. One such story: the bible, was eventually written down, yet for a thousands years, the majority of people still had to be told of it through word of mouth since they couldn't read. Christianity and the other religions, despite the officiality of their scriptures, continue to evolve and change to this day. Interpretations of the bible today are radically different from those 60 years ago.

Oh please! As good as asking who is the first person ever to make a fire!
People needed to explain things they couldn't understand, i.e. fire, the sun, the phases of the moon, the tides, lighting, storms, death, disease, lack of food, predators who were a real threat to the first homo sapiens [and those before them], the seasons and of course, why are we here. Should I go on?
They had no explanations so they made ones up. This happened all over at different times and places.
The first homo sapien was probably in a herb-induced trance when he/she thought they saw god. A common mistake by those on drugs... ;)

Heaven isn't an insecure place. there is not any longer something that any people can do to earn a place there. If it replaced into no longer for the dying of Christ on the go, none people could be there, by using fact interior the eyes of a Holy God, all of us fall short. The definition of all is - "ALL skill ALL, and that's ALL, ALL skill". If a rapist rather repents of his crime, or a murderer repents and asks Jesus to be their Savior, they are going to be in heaven, in simple terms as much as i visit. i could no longer rape or homicide, yet I sin. If God based who have been given into heaven for morality, no you possibly can be there. as quickly as we glance at Jesus head to head in heaven, we are able to make certain the only that gave up his life to shop, a liar, a cheat, a rapist, and homicide, a gossiper, and so on. while God looks on the saved, He sees His Son. have faith you me as quickly as we see our Savior head to head- we isn't remembering the sins of the those that are there- God does not!

Back in ancient days, peoples of the Earth didn't have scientific answers to things that happen to exist in nature, like lightening, fire, winds, ecc., so they ascribed these things to the action of some deity...First religions were really very simple...People used to believe in ghosts of their deceased, natural powers seemed supernatural...Now, that we have scientists, there's really no reason to believe in anything beyond reason ...

They were probably smart enough to realize that their compatriots would obey them, if they thought the guy was speaking for and through a deity of some sort.
In all likelihood they would have been the first con-man.
