I've had these little blighters for years, and those expensive medicines have never done a thing for them. For me,Zovirax was a non-starter. Carmex is a good preventive measure but no good once the coldsore is active. Compeed patches are useful for covering it so you won't have to worry where you're putting your hands - cos coldsores can be spread to other parts of your body(!)
HOW TO KILL IT - FREE AND SIMPLE METHOD
As for how to get rid of it, I know of one good, easy, and free way to KILL IT DEAD. What you need to do is go to your freezer and take out one ice cube. Using a facecloth or a couple of tissues to hold it, press the ice cube against the area of your lip that has the active coldsore and hold it there for 20 minutes. The ice cube will melt, obviously, so you might want some more tissues for the drips. This is not a very dignified method, but it works.
The reason this works is because the coldsore is caused by a virus (herpes simplex), and viruses cannot survive in environments very far below or above human body temperature. By applying ice, you will temporarily lower the temperature where the virus is living, and this will deactivate it. The tingling symptoms will go and you will see the blister start to disappear within 24hours.
Remedies that will help reduce occurrence of coldsores would be anything that strengthens immunity, e.g: lysine and other B-complex vitamins (as somebody mentioned), garlic, vitamin C, spicy food (great if you love Indian!), echinacea... you get the idea. Good nutrition will give you great immune support.
Good luck!

Surprisingly, the reply that I discover such a lot handy to that question is plenty extra functional than humans are making it, no offense, however what I do (the bloodless sore must be long gone inside part an hour) is get a cotton switch, drench it in water, then upload as so much salt as viable till the water now not absorbs it, then (and that is painful) rub it violently (do not cross nuts) towards the bloodless sore.

You can get a prescription from your doctor or their is some kind of OTC cream now. Personally the best remedy that I have found is L-Lysine, the vitamin. Take one daily to prevent outbreaks and when you first start to feel the tingle of a cold sore starting I pop a couple in the morning and evening until it is gone. they don't last as long or get as big when you do this.
good luck. Remember wash your hands after touching it, no kissing, and stay away from new borns.

Go to the store and buy Abreva. it is a miracle.
The last time i bought some it was like 13 bucks for a tiny little tube, that i wound up losing. But, it worked the minute i put it on the cold sore. stop wasting time. GO! GO! GO!
