I mean, for kids who are a bit younger and parents want to wait a year before they enter school, what do you do? Is this even allowed legally? Thanks.

My son is only 2 but I just like to plan ahead. I've heard of parents holding their children back b/c they are younger and that boys sometimes do better if they wait a year. I probably won't even consider it later but just in case I was curious.

In my state children aren't allowed to start school until after their fourth birthday, and on top of that, they have to turn 4 before September 1st (I think) if the child turns 4 after the specified date, the parents have to wait until the next school year to enroll them. Both my children and my nephew will turn 4 after the deadline, so they will be 4 1/2 years old when they get to start pre-school.

If the child is too young for school, then you cant let them in. If you mean if they are too immature for school, then you'll need to contact your local school district. They will probably want to do tests on the kid, and then decide from there. Parents know there kids best though, so if you think your kid needs special help or something, speak up.

My oldest start preschool at the age of three. He had to go two years of preschool because he had to be 5 before entering Pre K. ANd his birth day in December and now he in Pre K. My youngest is three and start his first year of preschool. Both of my boys have learning disabilities and extra year is good for them. They are slow learner and my youngest was born with mild hearing loss in both ears. My mom did that when I was little. I was in pre k once and she told school to send me another year since she thought she sent me to early. Then she thought I was going to graduate the age of 19 which I would of if I didn't skip 5 grade.

By law (well in my state) a child has to go to school by the time they are 5 years old. You do not have to send them to pre-school. I didn't send my son until he started kindergarten.
I would say as long as you didn't enter them and didn't tell anyone then you would get away with it but i think you should start them out in kindergarten.

Why do you want to hold back your child?
In some states your child will take an entry test to see if they are ready for kindergarten.
My girlfriend's son was held back because he could not identify his colors nor draw a simple picture.
I would ask the school, and no I don't think it's legal to hold your child back.

You simply just wait to register them.... If you don't register your kids the state barely knows they even exist except for a social security number... and it would take forever to track that.. (If ever)
So parents wishing to start their kids a year late just do so.
I hope that helped answer your question....
