I have a bunny and she is in her hutch outside, I know beagles are scent hounds and love rabbits. so do you think it is possible to train a beagle not to want to get at the bunny all the time?

Wow... You are asking for a lot here. Beagles were bred to ignore the human and go for the rabbit. They're also very stubborn dogs and aren't the type that remember commands forever. They will know what they're not supposed to do, but they will get a good try at it when they know no one is watching.

My beagles will spot any rabbit, cat or squirrel a mile away and go wild for it. Beagles are not vicious animals, and do not mean to kill, but they love to CHASE. I never let them off-leash in unfenced areas because I know for sure no amount of recall work I've done with them would distract them from that little animal.

Is it possible for you to keep the rabbit upstairs, away from the dog?

Well, my friend's show beagle does not care about rabbits at all! He will chase a cat, but totally ignores rabbits!

I think it's possible to manage certain inherent desires in dogs/animals... not necessarily train them out of the dog. Your best bet in keeping your rabbit safe would be to supervise the dog at all times when he's outside, and don't allow the dog to get to the rabbit by its self.

well if the beagle is really old or really young like almost a puppy you may have some luck but if it is at a mid-age you'll really want to be careful ecspecially getting it from the pound butt there are classes you can take it to , to get trained

Depends on what you consider successful. I used to do field trials and was successful many times....However, I dont think we are talking the same thing here. LOL

Hello, I have seen this done. Unfortunately, one bite, and the beautiful friendship can be over.
