Urine specimen can stand for few hours at room temperature but it needs to be transported to the laboratory within 2-3 hours of collection.

If it is not possible to get tested within such period, the specimen should be refrigerated at 2-8°C (but do not freeze). Refrigerating the specimen decreases the risk of overgrowth of contaminating organisms.

Chemical preservation of urine specimens may also be used if testing within 2-3 hours or refrigeration is not possible. Tartaric and boric acids are the most common preservatives available that allow urine to be kept at room temperature from 24 to 72 hours while still providing results comparable to those of refrigerated urine.

In all situation, urine needs to collected properly and the container closed tightly. A sterile container should be used if it has to go for culture and microbiological testing. Take note also that there are special tests that requires specific instructions in handling the urine specimen so you need to know what specific test needs to be done.

I think 16 hours. For example: If you need an evening specimen (8 p.m.) but it won't go to the Doctor's until 8 a.m., ( & there is lag time of four-hours), then I believe you could place a specimen in a container in the refrigerator over night. But if you are looking to get a clean specimen from your Dad 'cause you suspect he might be drug free & you prefer to submit his urine as your urine then the specimen has to be at least 95 degrees to pass as fresh urine. The refrigerator specimen could be as low as forty-degrees, but if you were to take the chilled specimen & place it in a plastic zippered baggie & insert it between your thighs for twenty-minutes or more it should warm up nicely to a passable temperature. Edit: Labs notice when the specimen is cool to the touch. Warm it up by tucking it between your thighs or into your armpit. Don't use a microwave because the oven can destroy stuff that is commonly found in urine & thus tip the lab off the it's been tampered with. Also use urine from someone of your gender as there are slight gender differences in urine.

haha may I ask why you want to know? You planning on messing with a test?

Oh well... yes it can sit a bit. You just need to keep it in the fridge, or a cooler or something. My aunt had to collect her urine for 24 hours, and she kept it in the fridge. This was a few years ago and I have yet to eat anything that has come from it.

it depends on the urine test. if its for a urine culture you might want to take it right away but it can last longer if kept refrigerated if kept at room temp for more than 1 hour it can grow bacteria and give a false reading.

Most types of samples can be left.
If it is an ACR, PCR, drugs screen etc then it is fine to wait. You can leave it overnight if you put it in the fridge!

I suppose it depends on the test, but I know some are okay if they set a while. You just have to keep it refrigerated.
