The options of the 400D are endless, depending on what you're going to photograpgh! If you read through the manual (really, do it) you'll be well on your way with the basics. You'll know about manual focusing (though you can use auto focus), exposure, aperture, whatnot. Read it, you'll know the basics and play it with from there on out.
The best way to learn after the manual is to take a lot of photos, playing with the settings.

READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual. Until you are totally familar with your new camera you should probably leave it in Auto or Program Mode and let the camera set f-stops and shutter speeds. Outdoors you should be fine using ISO 200; indoors you'll probably want to use ISO 400 or 800.
Good luck.

this won't be an excellent deal in case you employ a tripod, yet i come across the 400D a lot too small to hold with ease. The grip is basically too short and not very nearly thick adequate. regrettably the D50 is historic previous and its replacements (the D40 and D40X) are additionally infant-sized. So in case you like a digital camera with a actual, grown-up grip, you will could desire to head used or extra costly. desire this helps.

Put it on AUTO and snap away.
Take the manual for down-time reading, but until you know your way around, let the camera do the thinking.
Enjoy your trip.
