There are two main types of atheism: Implicit and explicit atheism.

Explicit atheism: Also known as gnostic or strong atheism, people who fall into this category believe there is no God.

Implicit atheism: Also known as agnostic or weak atheism, people who implicit atheists say that they do not believe there is a God. They do not claim that he does not exist, but they do claim it is irrational to believe in something before evidence or measurement of it can be found.

Note: This does not make them straight agnostic. If that were the case, then we would have to say that christians who believed in God (but were not absolutely certain - ie. they admit that they can't prove they are not in the matrix) 'agnostic' if we use "any uncertainty makes a person an agnostic".

In that sense, calling someone an agnostic would not tell us anything much about what they believe!

So that is why we call someone an atheist if they do not believe in God but also do not believe that they can completely disprove God's existence.

Think of it like a circular shaped magnet; atheism is the middle point or neutral state between polar opposites. We are born into this neutral state and due to indoctrination, some are unfortunate enough to be drawn to an edge of the magnet where their natural skepticism is beaten down and they believe in the existence of one of an infinite number of objects/entities without proof.

One goes from a state of not believing in anything, then being influenced by information received and then making a choice to believe in something or not to. One does not start out with a belief in something then make a choice to no longer believe in it.

The term ‘atheist’ to me is a superfluous, specious and spurious use of language. Say there was a group of people who believed in the existence of and revered gremlins. These people would be gremlinists and anyone who rejected the existence of gremlins would be agremlinists. Now, in this modern world, we’re all technically agremlinists, but because no one even remotely entertains the possibility that they might exist, the term which one would use to describe one self as a non believer of gremlins doesn’t exist either.

Atheism is the concept that there is no deity of any kind, by any name.

It is not a belief. It is an absence of belief.
