The closest focusing distance for this lens is .45m or approximately 18 inches.

If you want to really get close, buy one of the Nikkor "micro" lenses. I've found that a focal length of 100mm gives a good working distance from bees and butterflys.

The 50mm f/1.8 would be a fine lens in terms of sharpness, your current limitation is how close you can get with the lens. Since the 50mm is a prime lens, I think you could get some good closeup pictures, you just need something to help you get closer. For that, I would recommend a set of extension tubes. These tubes go between the lens and the camera, and will have a dramatic effect on the minimum focusing distance of your lens, in some cases getting you within inches of the subject.

I think extension tubes would be a good option for you because they are more affordable than most macro lenses, and if you do end up buying a macro in the near future, you can use them with that lens as well.

Kenko makes a good set of 3 tubes for Nikon for $169 at Link 1 below.

I have this lens and use it with my D200. It's not a good choice for macro work. I bought a Tamron 90mm w/Macro that is awesome for macro and as a portrait lens. The Tamron is also alot cheaper than the Nikkor 105.
Tamron did have a $90 rebate this past summer. Visit a good
camera store and try some different lenes out. Good Luck.
