I heard that in the movie "Blue Lagoon".

Or is that as false as the claim that lemon juice reddens your hair?

It doesn't lighten hair.

I have tried and it had no effect. (And I was assured that because I have got brown hair, I would get good results).

Later on, I read in a women's magazine that such recipe doesn't have any basis, and just damages your hair.

Yes it does work, It is a natural acid. If you mix lemon juice, water, and you favorite conditioner in a spray bottle, you dont have to worry about damaging your hair.... use an old hairspray bottle fill 1/4 way with an intense conditioner,I would use one for color treated or damaged hair, they are usually very good, then fill up to the 1/2 way mark with lemon juice and then fill up to the 3/4 mark with water. shake well, spray on hair and sit in the sun or go in a tanning bed, or even use your hairdryer!!! it wont change color immediately, it is a process over time. The longer you stay in the sun, tanning bed, under heat, the lighter it will get, also you can put a few tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide in the mix. I am a hairdresser, and I know the cost of highlights and color.

lemon juice claims to lighten skin; but the drawback is,
the drying effects is not good for the skin;
it won't redden the hair, but because it has bleaching effects on hair, the original dark color may seems to radiate that lighter or reddish glow.

some human beings say it does because of the acidity of it.. i does not recommend it however... in case you come across "papaya" in facial products, it rather is organic and has been shown to effectively whiten epidermis
