Me and a friend of mine are planning to visit Australia next year in July. My friend has a US drivers license and i have a Qatari Drivers license (left hand drive again). Would it be possible for us to rent a car from Adelaide ? Or do we have to give some test to convert to Australian ?

Sure you can drive here as long as you have a valid licence, however I would ensure that you have an International Drivers permit as wel.

You dont say how old you are either. The legal age for a drivers licence in AUstralia is 17/18. If you are younger than that you will not be allowed to drive.

THe only other problem you will encounter is actually hiring a car if you are under 25. The excesses are enormous and some companies wont even let you hire.

You can use your current licences but if the Qatari licence is not written in English, it would be advisable to get an International Driving Permit which you can get just about anywhere.

You will find that sitting on the other side of the car helps you manage right hand drive. The most confusing part is when you are turning into a road, you expect the traffic to be on the other side so think about it before you turn. Tou will get used to it quite quickly.

Enjoy your trip but remember that we drive right-hand drive cars.
So keep left, many tourists have had head-on collisions because they were on the wrong side of the road, especially late at night on country roads.

Overseas licence holders.

Temporary visitors, students and workers
Students, visitors and those who are working in South Australia on current temporary visas are permitted to drive with an overseas licence as stated below only while that licence is current. If that licence expires, you are required to obtain a South Australian licence.

If you hold a current overseas Driver's Licence of a particular class you may drive a vehicle of an equivalent class in South Australia if:

- you also hold a current international driving permit
- your foreign licence is written in English or is accompanied by an English translation of the details on the licence
- you are not disqualified from driving in South Australia or elsewhere.

You are required to carry your licence (and English translation if applicable) at all times when driving. You must produce the licence and your temporary visa to Police on request.

You might find it difficult due to insurance requirements as you are 17 and have a foreign drivers licence. You might be restricted to driving an automatic car if you didn't pass your test in a manual (stick) car. In the UK you are only allowed to drive a manual car if you have passed the driving test in a manual car. Also you cannot exchange your US licence to a UK licence, The UK doesn't recognise a US driving licence. So you would have to take the driving test, which is much harder than taking it in the US.
