They are not bad shooters, particularly in single-action mode. The main drawback is that the grips are a little large.

I'm assuming that this is a pistol someone already owns, and this is what you are either expected to shoot or has been suggested you shoot. A Beretta 92 is a full sized 9mm, so the recoil will be mild. You should be using a 2 hand grip so control shouldn't be difficult. It might seem a little heavy, but remember that heavy is good since more weight means less recoil. Talk to and watch the other women in the group to see how they shoot. If they're experienced and proficient learn from them. If they're making a lot of mistakes and can't hit the ground with their hat learn from that too. Just remember to keep a firm (but not tight) grip on the firearm and you'll do alright. Good luck and have fun.

There is a lot of good advice in the attached responses. The weapon you ask about is a solid gun, not bad to shoot and fairly accurate. It however might not be the best to learn with, unless you have the availability to use one and that is why you ask.
If you are contemplating buying one, I suggest going to a gun or sporting goods store and try them out for fit in your hands. Everyone has a different size hand and fingers which may make one gun feel perfect for you and not someone else.
Many firing ranges also have rental guns that you can fire and try out. Call your local ranges and find out if the have rentals or check with your local gun shops, many have ranges in store where you might also try your choice or choices out.
Going back to the 9mm, it is not that hot of a round if you are ready for it and have a comfortable grip on the weapon. If you have access to a .22 caliber pistol also it might be a good option to try that out first so you know what to expect when a gun goes off in you hand. The .22 will generally be much milder than a 9 mm or .38, .45 or any larger caliber.
The biggest thing when getting together with family or friends to shoot, is weapon safety. Please keep all weapons pointed downrange in a safe manner, always wear ear protection, do not mix drugs or alcohol with your shooting and don't put your finger near the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
Have a safe fun first experience.

Once upon a time the "powers that be" would have said no, a .22 is better. But a Beretta 92 is an easy gun to shoot (5" barrel, sufficient size, etc.) and 9mm does not have the recoil out of a Beretta to unnerve your husbands parents (unless they are in their 80s or something). Just use common "blasting ammo" (the stuff Wal-Mart sells) and practice good gun safety.

It will not be hard to shoot. But if this is your first time shooting, then you need some basic insructions on safety and shooting technique.
Gun safety rules:
1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
4. Always be sure of your target.
For shooting technique, I recommend the weaver stance http://weaverstance.com/index.htm

Not a bad weapon to start out with. In the Marine Corp, our service pistol is the M9 (berretta92). Being a marksmanship instructor, I routinely teach first timers alot on this weapon, male and female. Only complaint is that the grips and the magazine well can be rather large for a shooter with smaller hands. A fun shooting weapon when shot in single action mode (manually Cocking the hammer).

Beretta is a good gun. Just make sure it is not too big for you. I will agree with those who said to look around. I myself having smaller hands like the Springfield Armory XDs better than most other guns. I do like Berettas and the Px4 storm from beretta fits great.(at least better than the 92s). Also taurus is pretty good as well. But look around for a gun that will fit you perfectly.

When my 70 year old mother decided she was interested in shooting I bought a Ruger 22 to let her try. She fired 30 shots with that then moved straight on to my Beretta 92FS. I have some lovely pictures of her blowing water melons to pieces with that (she turned out to be Annie Oakley reborn, hitting tin cans at 15 yards with 9 of her first 10 shots).
But is it a good choice? No. They are expensive, complex, bulky and weak. Current build quality is questionable too. When I get round to transferring it to my ex-coastguard girlfriend, who loves it, I'll replace it with a Sig, BRNO CZ-85, Browning Hi-Power or a Glock 17, all better built than the Beretta and all with a reputation for reliability.
Sorry if that upsets the folks the military trains to believe in these things, but I am an engineer and I deal with how things really are.
If my 70 year old mother has no problem with a 9mm then you won't either. Enjoy yourself!

The Beretta 92-F is rather a big and bulky gun with a long trigger reach. There is only one way to find out, try it. The 9mm round is mild, so recoil will not be that bad, even for beginners.

beretta is a nice choice, just make sure you pick it up first an make sure it fits just right. you will loose a lot of $$$ if you buy it and decide it does not work for you. Pick us as many different size handguns and brands. Find the one that fits your hand the best. Look at trigger pull and how it feels as if you were shooting it.
