como estas- a greeting
salamat po- means thankyou
you should take some basic filipino before you go or hire an interpreter. some people who appear friendly might not be. my mother who was pregnant at the time (she didn't know) went with my grandfather and there were these people who claimed that they knew them. they were waving and kept saying "come here". what they were up to was stealing your stuff and possibly hurting you. my grandfather already knew, he grew up in the filipines dirt poor. they had to boil food they found in the trash to keep from getting sick. he seen a lot of things.
filipines is safe in most places my sister been to. but it is corrupted and people disagree on many things.
I wish you the best of luck, I too one day must go there and experience my culture even though my parents don't want me to go.
