The meccan pagans described him as,
"He is liar and a magician."
"He is possessed by devils."
"He is an insane plagiarizing poet."
The Meccans called him "a lunatic, a farfetched forger, a fool, a specious pretender, and deceitful."
"The unbelievers said: 'He is a deceiving sorcerer, turning many gods into one deity.'"
They saw an ulterior "motive behind the Qur'an. It is a fabrication." "They laugh at the Qur'an."
"Allah hasn't sent down anything. You are only speaking lies." "This is nothing but pure sorcery."
"The unbelievers say, 'The Qur'an is nothing but earlier people.' lore.'"
"These are fables of antiquity which he has reinvented." "What sort of prophet is this? Why was no angel sent to him?" "These are only confused dreams. He has invented them. Let him bring a miracle to us as the earlier prophets did." "They say of the prophet, 'He has forged the Qur'an.'" "We find him full of folly and a liar to boot."
10 points for the one who gets it right.

Cutting off heads and using violence is not the answer as Muhammad at this time was still weak, his followers weren't that many and the meccan pagans far outnumbers the muslims.

"Well, he forgave them and said peace and love them even more"
That's what Jesus would have said, but I'm talking about Muhammad.

"Anyone who has not sinned may cast the first stone!"
Again, I'm asking about Muhammad, not Jesus.

Hafeez, you got your history all screwed up. Please read Sirat Rasul Allah. It was written by Ibn Ishaq in 750 A.D. It was edited and abridged by Ibn Hisham in 830 and translated by Alfred Guillaume under the title, The Life of Muhammad in 1955 by Oxford Press. Just search the web for it.

"Leave me alone, infidel."
Let me tell you how the Prophet Muhammad responded to attacks on himself.
“There was a lady who threw garbage in the path of the prophet on a daily basis. One day, she didn't do it. The prophet went to inquire about her health, because he thought she might be sick. This lady ended up converting to Islam. So, that's how you respond to people who attack you, with forgiveness and with kindness.” (Source)
On February 8, 2006, Amir Taheri, a reputable journalist who often explains Islam to the West, used the absolutist word 'never' in the context of chopping off the heads of satirists during Islam's founding.
“The truth is that Islam has always had a sense of humor and has never called for chopping heads as the answer to satirists. Muhammad himself pardoned a famous Meccan poet who had lampooned him for more than a decade.” (Source)

like someone else said, he also worked with a few apocryphal texts. And he need not have read the bible. It has been fairly obvious to me from the first time I heard details about Islam that Muhammad's working knowledge of Christianity and Judaism was from hearsay. He seems to have heard a lot more than he actually read. At least initially.

As spoken in the Qur'an Muhammad pbuh answered the critics from the pagans by patience and ask for God's guidance. He told them that he was a prophet who had an obligation for delivering the islamic religion to them.God would open the heart to whom God wanted it...He did not care the pagans would accept it or reject it, because that was not his responsibility. He was a very honest and trusted man,not a magician and not a poet,no a deceiver and not a pretender. He tried to avoid force by hiding himself.

haha!! this is not ur answer but i just remembered an urdu nasheed in which there is a verse to the nearest meaning:
everyone has an urge to take revenge on ones enemies but to be able to embrace your enemies without feeling an aversion, is not of the norm.
forgiveness and prayer is what he repaid them with.
have you heard the story of Taif when he was calling the people to Islam, they pelted him with stones until his feet were covered in blood.he sat down on a rock when Jibraeel came to him and said 'Allah has told me to tell you that just give the word and he will crush the people of Taif between these two mountains.'
In reply the blessed Prophet replied 'leave them in the hope that one day the offspring of this tribe shall accept Islam'
thats exactly what happened.the children of this tribe brought Islam.
786: Islam will shine... no matter what they try to say.

When talking to them wouldn't stop them, and after Muhammad's uncle died and couldn't protect him, and after the Meccans killed so many of the early group of Muslims, especially the slaves, women, and children who had converted because of the teachings on equality before God, Muhammad couldn't stand to see any more die and took them to Medina where they had been invited to come. Because Meccans continued to stir up hostility against him and his followers in Medina, they went to Assyria/modern Ethiopia under the protection of the Christian king who had invited them there. Muhammad's reputation as most trustworthy was well known far and wide from his earliest days as a caravan merchant.

Truth is ever dominant.
They were no one there who did'nt accept that HE(PBUH) always speak truth and HE(PBUH) is very honest, very kind. They admitted it openly.Have you read that some people from that commnity had to go to Rome for trade at that time, and were called to see the emperor of rome (Kaisar)at that time.Kaisar asked them about the PROPHET and Islam. They were pagans, although, they admitted that HE(PBUH) is always true and honest. For the exact detail, you should see the some book on history. When they believed on the truthfulness of Islam,They immediately accepted Islam, and they were absolutely answered to their questions.........One has to go through the history.......everything will be clear out, if someone do it open-mindedly.
No, it was not with sword.........it is far from true.is it possible that you enforce someone, who's in majority, to accept the belief......and people go horrified to see you with sword....even they also have it.No,wise will admit that.

He was humiliated at Mecca in teh early adys of Islam, but has not lost teh hope. He used his sincerety, truthfullness and humble awys to attract people to the divine religion. When his life was threatened, he has to flee from Mecca, and took refuge at Madina. He preached Islam to infidals, and with his good manners attracted people to islam.
Unfortunatly he was threatened by war lords og Arab, and was attacked many times at Madina in the early days.
Just one year before hsi death, he/Allah's took his followers to mecca to offer pilgrimage, and was asked to return back by teh infidals of Mecca.
But after wards, when there was no hope, he attacked Mecca, and got it under his domain.
He never attacked any group of people to convert them to Islam. It was his good nature taht people attracted towards Is;lam. Prseently what is going on in teh aWorld, is areciprocation of USA Governments action towards grabbing Oil wealth of middle east.
