Silly question really, but I keep reading the best way to potty train your toddler is to put them in undies so they feel they are wet and have more of a desire to use the toilet. I'm worried what that will do to our carpet though if she's running around peeing on the floor. Anyone trying this method instead of the pull-up diapers have a suggestion on how to save the carpet? Or do you recommend going with the pull-ups even if it might take longer? We're renting, the carpet is a medium brown, lower quality carpet I'd say, and we need to steam clean it before moving out if that helps with answering...

I have just finished toilet training my 2 year old twin boys, although one isn't fully night time trained yet.
I went a bought about 20 pairs each of cheap undies for them and let them run around all day with them on. I used to put good thick trackpants or shorts over the top. This I found soaked up most of the moisture and my boys would tell me as soon as they wet, because they hated the feeling.
If anything spilled on the carpet, I would spray lemon water on it. Then take them to the toilet, then come back and wipe it clean. I have just moved into my brand new house, and really didn't want my carpets wreck, touch wood it hasn't left marks yet!!

Do it!!!! I started potty training my son when he turned 2 with pull-ups. About 2-3 months ago I took the advice of a friend and threw out every pull-up in the house. It took about 3 days and I think there was 1 accident on the carpet (just a little, he was trying to get there in time but didn't) but it was soooooo worth it! He's now 100% potty trained!!! I really recomend anyone working on potty training to give up the pull-ups. They aren't much different than diapers in my opinion.

Also... think of it this way... even if there is an accident here or there in the process... it can be cleaned up easitly. In a rent house there have probably been pets in that house in the past that made bigger messes on the carpet.

welp...my son never enjoyed pull-ups...he just used them as diapers.

You have to make sure that your child is ready to be potty trained. Is she giving you cues that she wants to use the potty? If not, then she is not ready. Don't force her to go, it will only hinder the progress.

Besides, a three year old has stronger bladder control than a two yr old.

My son was a few months shy of his 3rd birthday before he finally became fully potty trained.

As soon as they start to tell you that they are ready, it will usually be much easier. My son went from diapers to underwear virtually overnight...because he told me when he was ready.

for the first six months (he is almost 4 now), he had had only had a handful of accidents. Great bladder control at night (no nighttime accidents at all)....and absolutely no accidents in the past 6 months...so just gotta make sure they are ready, is all.

But, you can go ahead do as you will. Every child is different. since your carpeting is brown, you really do not need to worry about stains. I find that club soda is an excellent stain remover and scent decreaser...and its CHEAP!! Fits my budget well...lol

Good luck to you:)

I have had 4 kids and if you have a girl get those really pretty underwear with ruffles and tell them that if they use the potty that they can wear them.
If it is a boy; get them their favorite cartoon character underwear and tell them the same thing.
Also keep telling them that they are big kids now and praise them everytime they use the potty.
Here is the kicker though. Make sure that you are 'making ' them sit on the potty about every hour so they understand that they have to use the potty like mom and dad.
But to save yourself at night; use the pullups until they are totally used to using the potty.
It has worked on my kids and all of my friends !!!!
Always praise them.
One of my girlfriends told me that she used to make them take an old towel and dab their own mess up!!! Not actually scrub it but dab up the wet spot before she took out the carpet cleaner !
I hope that it helps.

Im not sure if whole undies thing works or not. i am much older than my younger sister so i practicaly helped raised her and what we did was put her in pullups and everytime she acted like she had to go or she told us,we would rush her to the restroom. when she went potty she got a sticker, which we put on a chart. when she filled up a chart she got a toy,not something too big or expensive. it worked pretty well. when she was ready we moved on to underwear. she didnt have too many accidents. hope this helps... be prepared for accidents no matter what you do...if you clean it right away it doesnt stain as much....it may seem inpossible at first but stick with it and she will be potty trained in no time...

it won't stain unless you leave it wet and walk over it with dirty feet so it absorbs the dirt. I also cleaned the carpet myself after it was all said and done anyway with a machine I hired for $25 at the local supermarket (coles)

I closed off doors to carpeted rooms (bedrooms not needed and loungeroom) as much as I could that i didn't want them to get to and made them spend most of their time outdoors so it didn't matter where they peed. I also took the potty out there so they could sit quickly. I taught my son to pee on a rock so he had better aim in the toilet.

don't stress about the carpet, it can be cleaned fairly easily and it won't stain. Avoid the pull-ups, they really are too confusing for them.
