You can put nearly anything in your checked luggage. The limits for carryons are that each item must be 3.4oz or less, and they all must fit in a quart-sized plastic baggie. If you're not sure if something might not go through, go ahead and put it in your checked bag. You always want to make sure you keep your keys, wallet, travel information, and any medication with you in your carryon.

I would suggest that you check the TSA website as they have a list for what is not allowed in both your carry on and checked luggage. http://www.tsa.gov/

Nope, it applies to all bags. Check the website of your carrier, they should have detailed instructions on what you can and cannot take on board, it helped me heaps when I flew for the first time.
