We just moved into a four-plex. We live upstairs over a family with two small boys. The boys and mother alike leave trash out in the parking lot, their dog tears into trash they leave on their porch, and never pick it up!
I have asked them before to please clean up after their kids, & dog and they did for a SHORT TIME, not soon after it was back to normal.
When they ask my son to sit for them, he has to clean the house to feel comfortable in their home! When he brought it up to them, they offered him a "lot" more money to clean up the house for them, which he would have done anyway, but hey getting paid to do it is better!
I am not a nit-picky person but I don't like litter. I even pick-up trash on the routes I take to walk our dog, because I don't like looking at it!
So how do I tell them again, and make an impression that will stick with out ruining our neighborly feelings? Do you think it would be out of bounds for me to ask the young ones to pick-up their trash?

We do have a dumpster on the grounds, a short 15 second walk from their front porch. So it isn't like we have to wait for the garbage truck every week to pick it up! It is just an on going problem. I have stopped picking up where they park, and the trash their dog drags out. But it just builds up. How can I get the point across??

Assuming that this 4-plex is a rental unit, contact the property manager. They should send a reminder to this tenant to keep their trash picked up.

In addition to this, it is a good thing to remind people - as neighbors - to pick up the trash around the building. It keeps it nice for everyone.

If they are littering in public (parking lot) there are laws against that and they could be fined which will usually solve the problem...If they are littering their own domain("their porch"). I say mind your own business...Its great that you pick up litter other people leave behind and most would agree that they dont like looking at it. But when its someone else's property my opinion is this ; Its not your place to tell someone what they should do with it. Having said that , there are still laws (which i dont agree with ) in some parts of the country, against littering whether its your property or not. You could find out if they are breaking a law and see if the police would show up to tell them about it and let you stay anonomous.

I would recommend talking with the adults of that home one more time. Or, if you are really fed up with it, send a letter, with pics to show proof, of what the area looks like.
There are laws regarding trash, and there are rules to be followed in complexes (apts). We are not allowed to leave any trash outside our apts.. take it directly to the dumppster, and put it in the dumpster (tied plastic bags). Trash left out like that can attract insects, rats, etc. Possibly do an anonymous call to the local health dist. office about them too.
Take care.

Many towns have laws about things like that. Check out your laws and if there is one about trash in the yard just report them. They will get a warning and the second time a ticket. If its going to cost them they might clean it up. Keep reporting it.

You want things to your standards so the best way is to do it yourself. These people are not going to change and constantly nagging them is only going to cause tension for both you and them. If you are happy to pick up when you are out walking why not do it in your own backyard. Its you it bothers so maybe you are the solution. Only other route is to report them to your local Council or whatever you have but then again it is going to create animosity.

Contact in this order.
1) The Department of Health, your local council and get a letter from them
2)Send that letter to the landlord and/or Agent, or both, with a letter from you.

Hope it works. I'm an ex Estate Agent. People can be soooo bad!

hmm.... this type of people is way too lazy.teach your son to be a free-dirt hopefully he will not follow them.Ask them to come to your house for neighbour-dinner and make sure you do call some of your other neighbour.Make sure you surf something like jelly in a throwable plastic case and put a dustbin in that room.Make sure you finish it first and put that thing into the dustbin.and then you wait..and wait...and wait untill that stupida family to finish it.if all of them did't throw it,you tell her son to throw his case.don't ask her mom to do so.adult do have pride.actually, when you do this you accidentally humilate her unnoticeable.maybe she feel emberassed.

tell them nicely that they are contamining the neighorhood with their mess. im sure there are cockroaches, rats, and maybe even opssums. and you say their house is just as bad on the inside as it is on the outside and they have kids. with all the mess their kids are more senstive to becaming sick. especially if there is rotting on food that has not been thrown out. and cockroaches may go into your apartment. so i suggest you have them hire a maid that will go in their case everyday to clean up after them.

I think this is the landlord's responsibility. If the landlord does not care for the value of the property and you can't handle it, perhaps it's time to start looking for another place to live.

first you should of course talk to the adults and let them know what's up. and if they disagree with you then you take pictures and possibly a video of what they do and report it to the county
