"Satan" is a Hebrew word meaning "opposer". Mohammad opposed all the doctrines which contradicted his alteration of scripture. Slaughtering, terrorizing, taxing, and oppressing the people who opposed Mohammad's armies were a perfect example of what the Satanic verses are all about.

The "Satanic Verses" is a real episode in Muhammad's life although Rushdie's book did not specifically state that it was about Muhammad. However, in Ibn Ishaq's Sira, the only account of the life of the prophet within 200 years of his death, it records the events that led to the "Satanic Verses" episode. What happened was when Muhammad started to preach islam, he was preaching about the unity of God, but he didn't specifically say what God's name is. However, the arabs at that time were pagans and the concept of God's unity is foreign. There were many Gods at that time at the Kabba in Mecca and people freely worship their own Gods. As such, Muhammad was seen as a trouble maker and he was making the people of Quraysh (Meccan tribe) uneasy. So the head of the Quraysh went to bargain with Muhammad.
The Quraysh promised Muhammad that they would give him so much wealth that he would become the richest man in Mecca, they would give him as many wives as he wanted, and they would submit to his commands, as long as he desist from reviling their gods and not speak evilly of them. As such, Muhammad made his God Allah (Allah is the God of the Quraysh) and admitted Al-Lat, Al-Uzza and Manat were Allah's daughters. However, later Muhammad regretted saying that Allah had daughters and said that it was Satan that put words into his mouth.
Why is this controversial? Because, this story is recorded in the Sira as well as the Sunnah (Tabari), that means its not made up. However, muslims are ashamed that Muhammad could have spoke on behalf of Satan, which to them is unthinkable. Therefore any mention of this puts them to shame and therefore, they prefer not to let others know about it, the less others know, the better.

As I know Salman Rusydie (now Sir salman Rusydie) refer the phrase 'Satanic Verse' to muslim gospel Qoran. If that is true it mean around 1++ billion muslims refering to the'satanic verse'. But as long as I refer to it, I never found something seem evil but the Qoran itself insult the Satan in many place of it. Satan is said to the real enemy of those muslim. How can be Satan insult himself. Really confusing. If you all really want to know try to read the translation of Qoran. The muslim say that the original Qoran written in arabic so many people couldn't understand it. The translation will be better to realize wether it's satanic verse or verse from God. But for me the 'Satanic verse' book by Salman Rusydie is only a prejudice writing. No more then that.

Emotional Approach:
A weak-hearted Muslim decides to leave his religion, goes abroad, writes a book demonising his old religion though it never did harm to him, and gets knighted by the Queen because of it.
More realistic Approach:
An ex-Muslim capitalises on a baseless claim that Muhammed (Sm) supposedly received revelations from Jibrail (A) that there are three goddesses other than God, and that Muhammed (Sm) rejected this revelation as false, and the ex-Muslim writes a book about it.
Conclusion:
All you need to know is the meaning of the term 'Mahound' which is used to refer to our Dear Prophet Muhammed (Sm) and you will easily understand why this ex-Muslim, Rushdie is controversial and has deeply hurt the sentiments of millions of Muslims all over the world.
