I also take Topamax for mood swings, and yes I've been told by other psychiatrists that I've consulted that it is called dopamax, directly from their mouths.
I disagree with them however. I am on 400mg daily, and used to be on 600mg 10yrs ago. It may be that I have built up a tolerance to the drowsiness side effects that this drug can produce.
When I was on the 600mg dosage, divided into 300mg in AM and 300mg at bed, I obtained a college degree and was still raising my daughter. However, I do believe that for most cases it does cause drowsiness.
There are other side effects also as stated in another answer. The reason I stay on Topamax is because it has good benefits of being a mood stabilizer while also helping with weight decrease, as it decreases appetite, unlike other mood stabilizers that increase appetite. Topamax also is now recognized to help with pain such as migraines.
I've noticed that while my pain is subdued, the topamax can work more directly on mood regulation and I actually am more aware and alert. Seems backwards from being dopey, but it works that way for me and if the psychiatrist and statistical reporting people would take time to ask the client specific enough questions and observe these specifications, they might realize this. Instead they are too quick to report what the DR thinks and what the DR puts into the clients head.
Topamax works through the hypothalamus in your brain. This is where awareness of pleasure and pain is established, amongst several other supervisory connections that are made.
So, the decision as to stay with Topamax and see if you can overcome the drowsiness really lies in whether ALL of the benefits outweigh the risks of ALL of the side effects.
There are several other mood stabilizing drugs with less side effects. Lacmictal is a good one and doesn't make you drowsy at all. I research them all before taking it, I'm a psychiatrist's nightmare, lol. Most can cause weight gain, Lacmictal doesn't. Good luck!

What is Topamax?
Topamax (topiramate) is a seizure medicine, also called an anticonvulsant. Topiramate is used to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 2 years old.
Topamax is also used to prevent migraine headaches in adults and teenagers who are at least 12 years old. This medicine will only prevent migraine headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It will not treat a headache that has already begun.
Topamax may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Yes, "Dopamax" has been considered a slang word for the medicine Topamax being attributed to its tendency to make the user forgetful and becoming slower than normal. So in a slang language one can say: "I forgot what you told me, I am on Dopamax."

Yes, I have definately heard of that. They call it that for a reason too ! It will slow you down physically and mentally. It may have alot of side effects (tremors, hair loss, kidney stones, diminished mental capabilities, etc). Write down all the important stuff now before you forget the question ! Make a blueprint of your home so you can find the bathroom later !
Goodluck !
