Yes & No...

If you have 1 of the first PS3's (20GB, 60GB or even 80GB) then Yes it is able to play PS2 games.

If you have the new 40GB PS3 then No you can't play PS2 games.

Yes on the 60gb, and about 80% of games can be played on the 80gb. As the 60gb uses hardware for Backwards Compatability, and 80gb uses Software Emulator for BC. The 40gb does not have either and has no BC at all. To check if a Ps2 game works go to http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

Yes you can but only on the 60G and 80G models. The new 40G model doesn't have backwards compatibility for PS2 or PS games.

yup it can ps2 game can be played on ps3 except for the 40gb model
