I am Catholic and they don't care if you smoke a pipe. In fact I remember a couple priests years ago that smoked a pipe at church functions.

Most people who smoke say that they want to quit but cant, They also say that they hate the habit.
What I have found in scripture is that there is no clear dictate about smoking. so, I for one do not believe it is a sin.
But lying is a clear cut sin.
lying to yourself must be a really great trespass.
If you smoke, admit that you do so because you like it.
If you can't quit be honest and just say that you are weak and really don't want to. or you are not motivated to.
Whatever you do don't lie, even to yourself,
especially to yourself.
Shalom

anything that will form an addiction is a sin because it becomes an idol. Or you can even call it the god of your heart. the 2nd commandment - not to have any idols, or you can even relate it to the 1st commandment when the addiction is preceved as a god. (look to Exodus 20 for the commandments)
In Romans 6 we read that a servant cannot serve two masters, it is either one or the other so it is either this addiction or God.

Smoking per se is not prohibited in Hinduism, but certain scriptures do emphasize on purity of body and soul and as such imply that any habit or act that harms ones body should be avoided.

I heard the raging homosexual disgraced former leader of the New Life Church in Colorado liked to smoke pole and meth, too.

Well obviously one cigar or pipe a year won't kill you, but it can get addictive, expensive, and unnessesary...not to mention discusting. Ever heard the story of the athsmatic and the smoker? They broke up.

Probably disallowed, but open to interpretation.
It just says in our 11 commandments that you should do only things that benefit yourself and mankind. Smoking will do the opposite, harming your health as well as creating pollution.

Do most Christian organiztions have a stance on this? I'm pretty sure the Catholic hierarchy doesn't make an issue of it.

i don't think mine cares one way or another. i actually don't know of anyone's who does. the only angle i could think of was if they wanted you to be healthy, which smoking is not, so...but i've never heard of a religion saying anything about smoking.
