The purpose of ettiquette is too ensure everyone is comfortable. Hence the not hitting your teeth with your fork, or eating mashed potatoes with your hands, or talking with your mouth full, or belching at the table. These things all can make people uncomfortable.

In the same way, to use manners to make another feel bad about their lack of manners makes them uncomfortable and is also rude.

As for which is more rude, whoever knows better, but does it anyway, is the most rude.

EDIT: in this situation, it seems that your daughter's boyfriend is the most rude. He should be understanding that you just got new dentures, and are still getting used to them. Besides, it is always rude to act visibly squimish.

How is it rude to hit your teeth with a fork? Your teeth are actually IN your mouth, there is a chance you might hit them once in a while. And if anyone considers it rude, they need to get their priorities in order.

It's bad enough to have bad manners, but worse to make a scene and embarass someone over it.
