No, you're not too old. But just keep in mind that you may very well have people..."kids"...almost 10 years younger than you giving you orders. If you can handle that, then you'll be okay. That seems to be one of the biggest problems people who are older than the average booter have to cope with.
I say use that as an incentive to advance as quickly as possible.
Good luck!

Master At Arms is becoming overmanned so advancing is going to be difficult if it is something that you want to stay in for several years. Currently the Navy is meeting its recruiting goals in a lot of areas so getting in can be difficult. You will require a waiver because you have 3 dependents (spouse & 2 children). You will have to do a decent ASVAB to be offered the MA Rate (job) if you are only looking into that Enlistment field. If you have a degree you can look into a Commission instead as an Officer provided you do have a decent GPA Surviving on Jr Enlisted pay can be difficult. You will be assigned to a command when you have completed Boot & A School. While you are there in training you will get BAH w/depedents which is to pay for housing & utilities. It will be based on the zip code you resided at when you enlisted. It can range from $700 to $2000 a month depending on your location. When you report to your first command you will be eligible for base housing but there can be a wait time, not all housing is actually on the base and you still pay for cable, internet and phone out of pocket as all the BAH pays for the rent of housing. Your base pay will be between $1337 and $1640 depending on what Rating (Rank) you go in as, that is before taxes & deductions per month. You wil not count BAS (eating allowance) because you don't get it during Boot, it is deducted when you use the Galley in A School and on the off chance you are assigned to a ship you get your meals provided for you. If your spouse doesn't work then it can be hard point blank. You will work odd hours including nights, weekends and holidays. ETA: Sorry Boats it was suppose to be $2000 level not $100 my bad

I don't think that you are too old. Just keep in mind that there will be younger guys than you at boot camp, but after you complete boot camp you will be with a mix of people of all different ages. My husband is going in at 26 and we just had our first child (although we made the decission together before I was pregnant with our son.) Just make sure that the reason that you are joining is for the right reasons. Then go talk to a recruiter. Make sure that it is a recruiter that you feel you can trust and they aren't running you in circles. Good Luck.

28 isn't too old. The Army even upped its age cutoff to 43 because the Chimp in Chief's war is having a negative effect on enlistments. It may, however, be a rather tough adjustment to adapt to taking orders from everyone above you, many of them younger than you, at age 28 and living with a bunch of barely-18 recruits during basic training. If I had my life to do over, I would probably join the navy, because even in wartime, the chance of getting killed or wounded in combat is pretty low unless you're a S.E.A.L. or a naval aviator.

Your not to old at all.. My fiance, husband to be in Dec, is in Navy boot Camp as we speak, he is 18 years old, he said he is the youngest one there, everyone else is in there 20's and 30's. Its a great experience, but its very hard being away from the ones you love! If you decide to join the Navy I hope you have a great time and thank you!!

Yes, with a four year degree you will at least start off in a pay grade of E3, I have seen many E3 and E2 provide for a family of 4. You will not have a ton of extra money but it is more than enough to take care of all necessities. The Navy will give Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) how much depends on rank, size of family and were you are living, it would be enough to cover a 2 bedroom apartment wherever you might be stationed.

my husband enlisted at 28 with No prior service. 13 years later he is now an O3. ( he did have his BS before enlisting and was picked up for OCS at the 4 year mark)
he wasn't even the oldest person in his Recruit division!

Talk to a Recruiter. They have the guidelines there and can tell you if you're past the maximum age.
