Savage makes a very good long and short action rifle(i have a model 110 30-06(long action) with accutrigger). However in your case i might start out with a Stevens model 200(long action). yes you will need to purchase a scope, mounts and rings(i'd recommend a 3-9x40). Anyways check out this link. The stevens doesn't have the accutrigger, but is identical in every other way to the model 110 savage. Thats because its made by Savage (just under a different name) plus you'll notice a little price difference. Best of luck to you.

As far as ammo? I am sold on the 150 grain Winchester Silvertip round for deer season. I only ever have to shoot them once. Furthest one out to date has been out a little over 400yds. I personally don't own a stevens long action rifle, but i did purchase a stevens short action .308. and plan on buying another one just like it. Yea ....They're good. lol. Best of luck to you.

Welcome to the sport of deer hunting. Like so many before you, so many questions. Good place to start is choosing the right weapon for your needs. The Savage 110 is a quality inexpensive choice and a good shooter. The choices are a long list for type of gun, meaning single shot, bolt action, semi loader, pump etc. The same holds true for caliber choices.
If you are planning on hunting brush country you will most likely have few opportunities for long range shots so there are certain weapons that will work extremely well in those type of surroundings, usually a shorter weapon to allow for more maneuverability in tight quarters.
If you are stand hunting over a farm field or across desert or plains a heavier long gun with a round that shoots a flatter trajectory and typically higher power round and scope might be in order.
Just about any of the .30 caliber or larger rounds are good choices for deer hunting. The .30-06 recommended is a great choice for just about any hunting short of possibly moose, although I know of people who have hunted them with that round also.
Possibly the best advice I can give you is for you to go to a dealer or large sporting goods store, look at guns, prices, ammo choices as well as optics and see what fits you, your budget and the type of terrain you will be hunting your quarry in. Good luck and welcome to sport.

The first thing you need to know about a deer rifle is you should always put the most money in your optics (scope).
The caliber gun you need is determined by where you hunt. Will you have to make long shots? Or will they be close up ?
There are many different gun companies, but the guns all shoot the same bullets. So if a gun is cheaper it doesn't mean its not good.
For deer .243, 7mm08, 25-06, .270, 30-06, .308, 7mm, .270 wsm, 7mm wsm or .300 wsm are all good deer calibers

Welcome to hunting my friend! And yes, do not hesitate to get a Savage rifle. They might be cheap, but they are pretty high quality. My dad got me a Savage 111 30-06 for Christmas '05, and I love it. The rifle actually comes with a pretty good factory scope, which I used on the rifle last season. But now, I use a Leupold 3-9X40 that my dad gave to me. Good rifle for hunting. Best of luck.

Hunting squirrel ain't nothing like Hunting. If you don't know a ton about guns then you don't know allot about Hunting! A 30-06 is the best long range cartridge there is. Hunting deer is like the longest game of hide and seek you've ever played. You either Hide for days waiting for quarry to appear OR you seek it out for days on end through mud and Uphills and hope they don't run when you get one in your sights!!(Yes you need a scpoe!) Savage makes a fine Rifle! Any model will work for you, I suggest you buy the most expensive one you can afford! You can't go wrong.

I also have a Savage 30.06 model 110 with the accu trigger, I have a simmons scope but would recommend a better scope. I would go with the Savage rifle. I got mine at walmart for $389.... just take it out dial in the scope and your ready to go hunting.... thats all.... :)

A 30-06 is somewhat overpowered for deer, unless all of your shots are at the range of >300 yds., or you plan to include bigger than deer size in your future hunting plans.
If you're going to stay with deer sized animals or smaller, you might want to consider a 25-06, a 260 Rem or a 7mm-08 Rem.
257 Roberts would be another good choice.

The best choice for your purpose is the Savage Model 110.* Buy a 3X to 9X variable scope for it.* I prefer to shoot 180 grain ammo in mine.* You could also look at a Remington.*
