I have a different take on karma than most. It is not a system of rewards and punishments. Values of 'good' and 'bad' do not exist on the spiritual plane. That opinion is simply our dualistic earthly mind trying to interpret the process. karma is a way of saying that the universe will give us the experiences that we need to learn how to be more loving, selfless, self-aware beings.

For example, someone cheats on their wife. Perhaps 6 months later through internal contemplation they realize the wrongness of their act and come to an understanding that it will never happen again. There is no need for that person to be punished or pay the debt of their karma. If they have learned the lesson that is what matters. However, when we don't learn, the universe will continue to give us increasingly more severe experiences until we are beat over the head with it.

God loves us. Would you punish your child out of vengeance?

This not an exact science as in say Physics, chemistry or Math.
There are various kinds of good and bad karmas.
Some karmas affect some right away and other take a long time depending on multitudes of reasons.
For example , when u plant a mango tree, the fruits bear after about 15 to 20 yrs.
One may not be affected in this life by bad or good karmas but get the dues in future lives. Far too many variables decide the how and when the effects play out. Good behavior can reduce the effects of bad karmas and vice versa. From this point of view there is justice in this world and a warning to every one that there is no free lunch.

Karma theory is akin to 'cause and effect' theory and works both ways.If we sow corn,we can't get wheat out of it,how so ever smart we may be.A particular type of 'cause' shall give rise to an 'effect ' of a like wise nature. Thus,a negative Karma shall affect us in a similar manner.
