A fire is not likely but there are other dangers. Exhaust gas will enter the driver/passenger compartment, especially on an older vehicle because seals for the speedometer cable, wiring, etc may be damaged or missing. Also a previous owner may have drilled a hole or two tapping power or hooking up additional lights or accessories. An exhaust manifold leak will also allow cool air (cold air in cold climates) to enter the cylinder head as soon as the engine is shut off. Instead of cooling down gradually, the section of the head near the leak may cool too quickly (depending on the size of the leak) and may warp the exhaust valve which can lead to expensive repairs, most likely a valve job as well as replacing the warped valve. The leak will also rob you of some power and gas mileage. If you need to drive the vehicle until it is fixed keep a window open. Drive it temporarily if you must but if you are thinking of ignoring it and will just learn to live with it, don't.

It won't cause a fire but it will cause a lot of unnecessary noise. Another thing it will do is cause fumes to leak into the cab if you have any openings in the firewall or floorboards so its best to fix it as soon as possible. A good muffler shop can do the repairs if you can't. Lots of room under that hood.

No, it is NOT safe. While fire is a risk, a far greater risk is suffocation from carbon monoxide poisoning. Have it towed in for repairs!
