I am having an MRI done with dye injected into my hip tomorrow morning. The hospital I am going to isn't being very helpful on telling what to do to prepare. I have heard mixed things about what you can and can not do. Like... No eyeshadow because of metallic parts? Some people have said you can't eat. Basically I am just wondering what the basics are. Can I wear bronzer, powder, stuff like that? I only ask about makeup cause I have to go to work right after. What about the nail polish I have on, do I need to take it off? Oh, and they said this is going to hurt cause the dye is going straight into my joint so I wanted to know if it is ok to take my prescribtion pain killer tramadol and also some advil.

Thanks!

The MRI scan is done with a great big electro magnet which sets up a magnetic field.

It then flips the field around and then back again, and very clever sensors detect how your body molecules move. The computer makes a picture of your body from this data.

However, because the machine uses magnetic fields, anything that involves metals that can be magnetized is OUT!

There have been stories of screwdrivers zooming about and damaging things in the chamber, including people!

There are metals that are allowed to be in the chamber with the MRI, but mostly everything is non-metal.

Things that are allowed: -gold rings (non-ferrous metal)

-certain medical implants are allowed (and some are disallowed) because they contain non-ferrous metal

Do not wear anything with magetizable metal.

You would do well not to have nail polish (this generally helps in hospitals because finger probes have difficulty seeing through nail polish).

You should not wear jewellery. Your clothes should be plain and not have metal studs (like some Jeans) or metal glitter or any such thing. Wedding rings (often gold) are usually allowable.

You can take your tramadol and advil before the procedure.

You would be safest to bring some make up and apply that after the scan. I'm not aware of anything dangerous in makeup, but if you don't know you're probably best not to bring it into the MRI.

Regarding eating - this is usually only important if they plan to anaesthetize you. Most people having an MRI can eat prior to their scan.

However, you should clarify all of this with the MRI people. Surely they have given you some information before your scan and a phone number to ring.

Call them up and ask them about this stuff. They will know much better than we will - what sort of scan you are having and why - whether you can wear makeup or not - whether you can eat before your scan etc.

I don't think you need to do anything other than what the doctor advised you to do.but you should go early in order to be able to refresh yourself up before going to work.
good luck.
