It is a labor of love...(I have been working on German)
I work at it daily. Just like some people work at crossword puzzles. I have a book I keep in the bathroom (on the back of the toilet). I have another book in the bedroom by the alarm clock. I have some CD's in the truck. I watch a German CNN program daily on cable. I get a German newspaper once a week. I buy a German magazine from time to time. I listen to a German radio station on Sunday. I have a German penpal I email with. When I go to a restuarant or store...I think what I would say under the circumstances in German.

I am thinking about having a German foreign exchange student staying at my house next year. I am always on the lookout for a German person while out and about. I seek out German food, music, and cultural opportunities.

You just have to seek every opportunity to think, eat, act, and breath the language you are working on. I think it is fun! There are some adult language courses (non-credit) at some of the vocational school or colleges. They are cheaper and less stressful that taking college level language courses for a grade. I have taken two...along the way.

That is my BEST ANSWER!

You definitely need a language learning video, software, or CDs. You can also get hold of a popular audiobook in that language, and then follow it with an English copy of the book on paper...not exactly perfect help, but it will give you a multimedia approach to translating natural sounding language, such as dialogue between characters or narration of a situation in the story, instead of contrived language like stupid travel questions.

I got a lot of French practice by watching movies in French. If the language you are trying to learn is Spanish or French, then you'll be able to watch a lot of English movies in that language by going to the language set-up menu and choosing that language instead. If not, see if you can rent a film in the language you are learning from a video store or netflix.

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu,

Like you, I also learn Japanese which nobody around me learns neither communicate it.

Here are the strategies:

1. You'll need a book to learn the grammar. Go to amazon.com and search i.e. "Japanese". Afterwards select the most popular one and buy it anywhere you want.
2. Dictionary, I prefer electronic one, as it's much faster
3. Movies, articles, mags, etc..

The training will focus more on vocab memorization and usage. Grammar is way too easy to learn.
First understand the grammar in beginner section. Everyday make at least 10 different sentences with the same grammar with completely different vocabs. Reduce the amount of sentences as you familiarize and master.

This training will be more fun and easy:

For multimedia training [movies, books, etc], try to understand them yourself with the help of dictionary. Identify the meaning of words by words, then phrase by phrase, push your brain to analyze it.

To learn new vocabs, don't write a word and memorize it blindly. Instead, write it down with the corresponding sentence, quoting from multimedia will be best. Test yourself to understand every word in the sentences you wrote, do it three times a day after meal[prescription? ^ ^]

As for me, the ratio of grammar:vocab:multimedia training is 1:4:2

After you manage to be able to talk and write casually, write your school notes in that language! Using skype, talk to anyone from the respective country with that language! You'll master the language fast astonishingly!

Even English isn't my original language, to tell you the truth, 80% of my vocabs are from games and movies. Using this strategy, my vocab mastery surpasses even my English teacher in school :P

Good luck! Ganbatte kudasai ne!

Go to a bookstore or on line to order a C.D. set or cassette tapes.
Normal they are spoken by native speakers to help you pick up rhythms and accents in words. And you can learn at your own pace.
