i have had my ears pierced twice now. both times i bought cheap earings and had my ears pierced by Claire's, and both times just one of my ears swelled and turned red and puffy. it didn't really hurt, but it was warm. i am not sure if this is an alergic reaction or an infection, or is my body just not able to be pierced? i would really like to have pierced ears, so should i try a different piercing place? any suggestions?

I'd look around for a dermatologist/doctor who pierces ears to be on the safe side.

Piercing at ANY place that use piercing guns is bad!!! Even if it is a doctor who does it. The reason is because the guns are usually made with plastic which cannot be properly autoclaved (a very hot steam pressure cleaning method using in laboratories to clean bacteria, germs, and blood borne diseases).

You should find a reputable piercing shop to have it done. The needle will make a clean cut through the skin and therefore will heal much faster and easier than done with a gun. The gun uses force of a blunt object (the earring) to push it though the skin and it damages the skin around it usually causing it to heal slower. Try this experiment with a piece of paper and a pencil; have someone hold the paper and just drop the pencil through the paper; the paper pushed through the other side is like the result when you use a piercing gun.

Needles can be autoclaved. I've had my first piercings done at a place that used guns and that sucked...got infected in 1 side. After wanting to get more piercings I learned to go to a piercing shop and comparing the healing time; the needle piercing was a lot faster with no complications at all. Overall....piercing guns are bad!

It sounds like you're just sensitive to that kind of stuff. Some people just can't get piercings because their ears "refuse" the earring. You might have had a reaction because you didn't clean it enough. I recently got my cartilage pierced at a kiosk in the mall. Mine was fine since I cleaned it twice a day like they told me. My friend didn't really clean hers and hers got swollen, red, and warm. I got my first hole at Claire's when I was in first grade and they're fine. (I'm in college now.) I also got it done with a gun. If you want to get your cartilage pierced, make sure the piercer can see the vein in your ear. If they pierce through the vein it will be much more painful, bleed a lot, and cause a lump in your ear at that spot. Claire's is fine if you want to, or find another jewler that can do it too. Hope I helped! :)

AVOID PIERCING GUNS LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Guns are so awful for your body and damage the tissue. Go to a piercing studio and have your ears pierced with a sterile tri-bevel needle. It will hurt less and makes a clean cut that heals better. Also, ask for titanium jewelry as it is biocompatible.

safepiercing.org and tribalectic.com can list a few good studios.

I had the same problem. One of my earlobes is thicker than the other, so the posts weren't long enough. I read that it's better to get piercings done at a reputable piercing parlor than some place like Claire's that uses those horrible little guns.
