My best friend is a culinary arts student. She's really good and cooking is obviously her passion. She's always talking about all these things that I don't know. Like how many ways you can cut a potato and what how to "bone" a chicken. I'm very supportive and I want to get her something that she would like and be able to use for Christmas but I don't have a clue what people who cook want. Please help.

I would get her a gift certificate to a nice kitchen store like Williams Sonoma or eve Pampered Chef. Present with a cute set of measuring spoons ( the ones that are heart-shaped and measure sizes like a "pinch", "dab", and a "sprinkle". I am a baker and I love to be able to choose my own supplies. One other idea is to find an unusual cookbook, like maybe from Paris or Italy that might be as much a coversation piece as allow her to learn some cultural cooking techniques.
(Anyone wanting to pay for me a series of Australian-method cake decorating would get much appreciation for such an appropriate and perfect gift.)

well it really depends what she enjoys cooking, and what she currently has. If she loves baking- Make her a baking pack with "silpat" mats (like permanent baking paper) different cake molds and a book on cool icing techniques, and some fancy flour (look up "00" flour or chestnut flour).
If she's more of a savoury gal, I would go for those metal presentation rings (get a bunch- they are a bit $$$ though) and 6 large round white plates with no design or anything on them- unless you get the fancy kind. (no crap plates with pink flowers all over them) u get the jist. A really nice glass centerpiece bowl or something lovely to present food in is great too. Last suggestion- get down to your local asian market and check out the cool crockery and interesting gadgets- and throw some snacks in there too! You're a great pal.... i wish ppl would buy me kitchen gear!

One thing to consider might very well be a gift card to a bookstore or some place like Bed Bath and Beyond. She can get a cookbook (or several) at a bookstore if she would like a nice cookbook. And Bed Bath and Beyond has plenty of things for use in the kitchen that she might get with such a card. Good thing with these cards is that if she doesn't want something to do with cooking she can find plenty of non-cooking items

Or find out if there is any particular thing to do with cooking that she'd really like to get but can't bring herself to get. Then if you can afford it you can get it for her.

Find out ahead, maybe have a friend find out...unusual cooking utensils she doesn't have....there are odd ones you can find....am sure she doesn't have them all.

Or buy her an antique kind of cooking utensil like one that make pizelles...check first what she has, what she would like to have....then go to a cooking specialty store.

Or maybe she would be just as happy having a new bracelet, etc. Everyone doesn't have just one interest....she might like to have something new to wear when she's not cooking.

get her someting that has nothing to do with cooking. Cooking dominates her life, and probably other people will get her cooking stuff, but since you are her best friend, give her something else, for herself, that you know she will appreciate... other than cooking goods... try the body shop, bath and body works, vistoria secrets, etc.

Get her a gift certificate to a Williams-Sonoma store. That way she can get what she wants, and she will know that you support her passion and have been listening to her.
