I'm an Interior Designer and I am working with a client who would like new carpet. I specialize in color consultation and have not shopped for carpet before. I found some carpet by Shaw that she likes - retail priced at $32.50/sq. yard - my cost is considerably lower than that. This does not include the pad and installation.
Is this price out of the ordinary (for the Seattle area)? Am I supposed to give her a percentage off of the retail price? With most items I just charge the retail price, but with carpet I wasn't so sure that ANYONE really pays retail. You know when you buy a mattress, or even gold jewelry - you can always find a 30 to 70% off kind of deal. This is a great client and I don't want to rip her off - nor do I want to cheat myself out of my profits. If you have read this far then THANK YOU!

I did give her more than one choice - I brought over many samples. This was actually the least expensive of the lot. I have been researching online and cannot find a good range of carpet prices anywhere. I thought here might be a good place to ask - no need to be smarmy.

We own a retail store in FL and offer decorating services. We carry carpets styles in price ranges from $12 to $120. The price you list is mid range for Shaw. If you email me the style I would not mind giving you an honest opinion about the resale price and your profit margin as a designer. sunrisecitycarpets@yahoo.com

since you have not bought carpet before i would think you would get 3 or 4 prices and compare. pad and installation will vary also. once you have done your leg work which is what you are getting paid for then make an intelligent informed offer to your client. you should be able to give your client more then 1 choice
