this method takes a bit of a time and effort but it rerally worked for my daughter and i.
with my daughter i put her cot matress on the floor of her room for a month for her to sleep on. she only ever rolled of once, its not that big of a fall so it didnt hurt her.
i then introduced the "big bed" into her room after two weeks and put a few teddies on the bed and made it up with a doona and pillows like it would look when she would be sleeping in it.
then after the month i started putting her in the big bed once a week and took her cot matress out of the room so she couldnt get out and sleep on that.
then increased the time i put her in the big bed every two weeks. she seemed to be fine with this and coped well with the very very slow transition.
also if he likes the sleeping bag keep him in it. and put a light blanket over the top of him.

My cousin had this problem with both of her kids. The best advice I can give you is to make it exciting for him. Take him shopping so he can pick out his very own bedset for the new big bed. Maybe even let him get a special stuffed animal to keep on his bed. Does he like listening to music when he goes to bed? If so, I recommend those really cool pillows with speakers in them. They come with an audio input jack. I'm pretty sure a pillow with built-in speakers would be the coolest thing ever for a two-year-old. But make sure he knows that these new things you're buying are for the big bed only.

I just made the transition from my bed to toddler bed for my 20 month old son. I was surprised at how easy it was. I put him in his new bed and out like a light he went. We are on day 2 Now and he sleeping in his own bed ;-)

My youngest is nearly 3 and has just made the transition to a big bed. He sleeps on the bottom bunk in a room he shares with his 12-year-old brother. We put the rail that normally go along the top bunk down along his bed. We allow him to walk down to his room and climb into bed himself. he still has all his nighttime comforts.

Make it as comforting as possible, make him choose the bed cover/pillow etc, and for one night, try to sleep in that bed with him. It can make him feel "at home"

just make it fun for him. with my daughter who is 21 mo i let her be a part of it i took her shopping with me and got her all excited she got to pick out her bed set. my daughter is the type of kid who loves to help mommy. so if you son is the same way let him help you get him excited about it and let him be apart of it . yes its a big step for him. but it can be an easy one for every one involved.

With my son I did only naps for a couple of weeks before trying at bedtime and that seemed to work well for us.

give him his favorite blanket, or stuffed animal to sleep with. he'll be fine. it's the same as his other bed, just larger.
