Okay.. I have worked really hard to get my credit right. The guy i'm about to marry has bad bad credit. Is it true that when we get married, I'll also have bad credit , the same credit that he has and if so then why. Do they combine the credit score. I hope this is not true

It's not true. You marry a person, and you do not marry their credit track. Each of you will have the same credit score after the wedding that you had before.

It depends on the state that you live in. Some states do not combine credit some do. You will have to look at what states are community property states or not. I hope that you live in one that is not. here is a link to the list: http://www.familylawsoftware.com/splitgen/sp/gn/explaincommunitypropertystates.htm
Click on the link or search "list of community property states"
Hope this clears things up and that you dont live in one of these states. No matter if you hear that its not true it is. Look up Community Property and you will find out the truth. This link is also a good one http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/DrDon/20040209a1.asp?prodtype=cc
Best thing is just dont buy anything when you get married. Do it before you do because after you get married you have to have your spouses info and use thier credit. Bad part is you have to go it alone for what you are getting a loan for. Really do more research on community property if you live in one of the 9 states. You will maintain what you did prior to the marriage but anything after will be put on your credit.

No! You will both have the exact same credit as you had before getting married.

Once you get married there are things that could effect your credit. 1) If you get joint accounts then BOTH of you will be responsible. If you get joint accounts then you are both equally responsible regardless of who has "agreed" to pay. 2) Authorized user lets say you put him on an account as an authorized user then he can use the account but YOU and only you (the primary user) will be responsible for the account. In theory he could use this account and leave you holding the bag!

My best advice would be to keep your accounts seperate and avoid joint user or authorized user accounts. My ex wife charged up stuff and left me hanging on the authorized user accounts and on top of that used a lot of our joint accounts and then flaked out and left the state. Now the credit card companies are coming after me! Unfortunantly the cc companies have every right to come after me since it is equal and since they have discovered that she is a flake! lol!

Avoid the pain and try and focus on the marriage itself and avoid getting too inter mingled on your credit! I know this sounds very un romantic but with the divorce rate at over 50% it is best to protect yourself especially in this case when it is you who has the good credit. My good credit got hosed! Don't let this happen to you! lol!

No, this is not true. The only time both credit scores are affected is when you co-sign for some sort of loan. Until then your credit score is completely separate from his.

No. That is a misconception people say that because many people who get married share their credit. This means they make purchases using both their names instead of just one. You are only responsible credit wise for what you put your name on.

no, but your mate's credit score could affect you chance at getting a good loan rate if it is bad...The bank will look at both scores if you apply for joint credit.
