You don't have to buy a new T.V., but by 2009 all televisions will need to be H-D (High Definition) ready .... because the majority of television networks and shows will only broadcast in H-D.

So if you don't have a T.V. that is H-D ready, you will need to get some sort of converter to make it H-D compatible.

It all happens on Feb.19,2009. All broadcast go from analog to digital. You will need a converter box to change the digital signal back to analog, much like you may now have a converter box that lets you watch digital TV. Your current TV will still work just fine as long as you have the new type of converter box. Price for the converter is suppose to be about $25.00, and the US goverment is suppose to give you a credit of about $20.00 to off set part of the cost. Bottom line, your TV will still be as good as ever.

It's your old analog signal that is going to end. any television that is made before March of this year, is going to need a special decoder box that receives digital signals, only digital signals will be sent after March 2009, but some cable companies are going to switch over next year. Comcast, being one of them.

it's about analog transmissions. yet most tv stations have been transmitted in analog and high definition for years. i heard a couple months back that a full switch to transmitting in HD should take place in 2009. don't know if you would need a new tv.
